I just purchased on gunbroker this "Remington 1187 12ga Premier Trap, Rem Choke 30" barrel" for $400. I have been looking for a reasonable trap gun people could use when they don't have their own. Ran across this last night and noticed the auction was going to end at around 4am so thought I might get a good deal. Of course I bid first, research later..lol, When I get the gun what do I need to look for when cleaning and making sure it works properly etc. what type of shell catcher?

I own an 11-87 premier trap also, bought mine new. Gun probably has the target barrel which, at least mine is, the over bore barrel. The chokes are marked Full, Extra full & super full. Remington gunsmith once told me they are actually i.c.,mod & full. because of the choking internally in the barrel it will never shoot an open pattern, even with a skeet choke. Trust me on this one assuming your gun has the same barrel. They are great trap guns & I would never sell mine for $400 so without seeing it I would say you did OK. Enjoy your new to you gun. Always fun getting a new toy. Colonel

...... When I get the gun what do I need to look for when cleaning and making sure it works properly etc. ......
Go on down to the the patterning board, with all of your remington/and other choke tubes. Set yourself up at 35 yards and have a look see. You will most likely find that the "full" choke is useless and the midrange tube is about right. If you are lucky enough to have a Carlson's extended improved cylinder choke, plug it in and check that one out. It may do everything you want it to do from the 16 yard line. The gun I had was also fond of a Carlson's .700 constriction tube.
The barrels on these 1187 Premiers need to be tuned with various chokes for different applications. Rarely are the three chokes supplied enough/adequate.

I shoot a 11-87 with a over bored factory Trap barrel and have used different chokes the three that came with it and other Rem Chokes like IMP cylinder .009 + the barrel built in .018 for .027 constriction with OK results as my 16yd average is 97 for the 2016 target year so far.
I do not use my 11-87 for Handicap as I use my 1100 for Handicap with a Fixed Choke.

That's a smoking deal on what appears to be a very good condition 1187 Trap. It does indeed have the step rib barrel, which would be factory backbored.

I was always told to put in the choke that matches the backbore and throw the rest of the chokes away?!?!?
Based on my experience with this particular barrel you were told correctly.
Nonsense.

I use the more open chokes for singles and doubles. For caps the more restrictive chokes.

The tightest choke should be reserved for premium shot. Despite the backboring working great with cheap soft shot as found in promo loads, they still work best with the more open chokes.

Even if you put in a true cylinder bore or open skeet choke of .000" constriction, or even a spreader choke, this barrel will never pattern less than a modified. Because it already has a built in modified constriction (.018" nominal). I know, I tried using it for sporting clays with cylinder and spreader chokes and patterned them. (It's also on the heavy side for sporting clays, so I use a 28" light contour field barrel for that.)

If you do decide to get rid of some of the chokes, don't throw them away. Put an ad on this site. Someone will buy them.

I had at least one 11-87 premier trap model. Since I had several Remingtons over time, I forget if it was the 11-87 trap or another one, after MANY rounds, I cracked the wishbone looking part that the bolt pushes back against the recoil spring. The replacement only cost a few bucks and I changed it myself in a few minutes. The T&S shell catcher worked fine. I think they are good guns.

I put a gozillion rounds down range for 20 years with one. I used a regular mod choke. Always gave me good breaks. About the only time it gets used anymore is if family needs a spare trap gun or if I get a wild hair to shoot doubles. Good to have it in reserve. Get a spare set of gas rings and a few o rings to toss in your shooting bag. I think you did fine for $400.

I bought a used 1187 trap in the 90's. After reading about the barrel profile, I was skeptical. After shooting a few targets I became a fan. If you give that barrel, choke system a fair test (some targets), you will find it to be an excellent trap set up!!! The one thing I would urge you to do is find what the point of impact is. My first time shooting the 1187, I was 1 for 12 from the 27. The one broke target was just a small chip. I finished the round from the 16 and managed 6 or 7 very weak hits out of the 13 targets left in the round. At the time I was shooting a high, 90%, gun. The 1187, with the beads stacked, shot 30%! 6" LOW at 40 yrds.! To me the gun was un shootable. I sent it to MoneyMaker and had a 1" high, 80% rib installed. Although the high rib turned the gun into a target crushing machine, while it was away getting the rib work, I got into "pot" shooting. With all the shell changing, call birds, 6's, 5's, buffer, ect, an auto was not the right tool. SO, even though the 1187 is a great trap gun, mines in a case somewhere and hasn't seen the light of day in15-20 years. Get the POI right for you and you will love the gun! Sorry about being so long winded.

I received the Remington, Everything seems great ran about 75 rounds through it. When the action is open and not loaded you can here something rattling when you shake it. when it's closed there isn't any anthing rattling. Is that normal? I haven't owned an automatic shot gun for many years. thx
