I just aquired a High Standard (Riot) 12 gauge shotgun. I looked all over the reciever and can't find a serial number. Can anyone guide me in the right direction to find it.

Depending on how old it is, it may not have one. They were not always required. I am speaking in general terms and do not know about High Standard shotguns. My High Standard pistol is serial numbered clearly on the slide.

I have a couple of Ljutic's (a rifle and a shotgun) and neither have a serial number. I know that there is at least one other gun out in one of the safes with no serial number. At the end of WW2 there were some 30 Carbines in a parts clean up and some of them had no serial number so it's not that uncommon.

Serial numbers on firearms in US were made mandatory by the Gun Control Act of 1968.

This gun is in like new condition, was owned by a 91 year old gentleman who passed away. His daughters found it in the house and wanted to get rid of it. The number should be somewhere on the reciever but I don't see one. I don't think that it was ever shot. Looks like he kept it near his bed, just in case. Anyone know if any of these were made without serial numbers?

Ed, According to several sources, serial numbers began appearing on the High Standard shotguns during mid to late 1967. Beginning about 1958 many of these shotguns had a two-letter date code.

I don't think that's legal

Ed, probably isn't. A lot of pre'68 shotguns and 22's didn't have serial numbers, so one may assume that your shotgun is a pre '68. Best part is it is untraceable so when the gun grabbers come for your guns that one doesn't exist.

Hello Bob,

With the exception of some very early shotguns before about 1950, some exported shotguns and some police shotguns, High Standard did not serial number shotguns before January 1969.

high standard didnt have to serial number long guns until laws were passed because of the 2 kennedy's assasinations.
guns w/o serials are recorded in the FFL transfer serial number blank as NS.

Turns out that this gun, with a CL on the barrel was made, without a serial number, in March of 1969. The law requiring serial numbered guns was signed in 1968 but guns made prior to the end of 1969 didn't need one. Thanks to RickN, I got this information from John Stimson. Anyone with questions about High Standard guns can get information from John by clicking on the link to his website, posted above by RickN.
Thanks to all for the help. Now I'll be able to sell it.
