I've looked around for gun case foam the last couple of days...and all I have found cost as much as some used gun cases cost complete.

Is there a good source for gun case foam...and what exactly is it called (there are a lot of types of foam).

Thanks...Stan

You don't need much of it, 1/4" thick is sufficient. Try craft store where they sell school project supplies.

Another reasonably price source Bob....thanks for the tip!!

Also kudos for the suggestion Steve...good idea. Thumbs up!

Now that's what I'm talking about. I've looked for two days and haven't found a source half as good as the ones above.

I love this forum...

All the best ...Stan

There's plenty of foam products out there.

Just getting the good stuff at a reasonable cost is the trick....and knowing what is best suited for long term use in a gun case.

I found a LOT that cost more than many used gun cases are worth....as if it was gold and sold by the square inch...lol!

Doug mentioned the Foam Store in the second post above...so I called them . They know something about that business...a wealth of knowledge there! 30 year veterans, with recommendations for a product that will stand the test of time, and they have it at an affordable price.

..also had a few tips on several diffrerent ways to cut it neatly.

THAT was what I was looking for...in addition to foam. There's so many choices I really didn't know one product from another. I messed up the bluing on a shotgun long ago, with some egg crate foam that came in a cheap gun case I bought at Wal-Mart.

I'd I like "not" to have a repeat performance of that episode...so I decided to be a little more thorough this time.

Stan,

Gun cases are basically for transportation, not for storage, but I can see it's rather difficult for some dealers going to different gun shows every month to unpack and repack every shotgun they have. So some guns stay in the case constantly.

To avoid finish damages from gun case storage, the best way is using gun sleeves inside the case.

Any foam contacts the metal will potentially cause rust or discoloration if moisture, cleaning agent, or even oil are present.

Make sure it is oil resistant. I have seen a Pelican case foam turn into a sticky mess, luckily no gun stored inside. I don't think it was the original, middle layer of foam though.

I shoot 4 or 5 days a week.. My guns only leave the case when I'm shooting, or cleaning them...

My plan is to use a firm closed cell foam and cover it with a good quality fuzzy or felt like fabric.

I made an aluminum hard case, I used a foam mattress pad for the interior of mine. I also bought a cheap fleece blanket that I glued to the different compartments that hold the gun after it is disassembled. I figure when it starts looking dirty and worn I will spend another $10 and reupholster it.

I got some from the company that made my gun case. Free of charge and shipping too. I have seen some discount stores that sell it in their sewing and materials dept. They'll even cut it to dize for you. Good luck

How did your foam turn out?

I have a Pelican 1700 I'm thinking about outfitting. My original plan was to build dividers and lay it out like an Americase, but I'm thinking now it may be easier/wiser to buy VERY dense foam and cut it out to match what I'm putting in.

The best thing is to make sure there is a good layer of cloth between the gun and the foam. I have seen people pull the egg crate foam out of a cheap case and wrap it with flannel cloth. That will work pretty good to avoid chemical or heat interaction, even if it is not pretty. I am pretty partial to the green or navy velvet in my Americases.
