Peter,

Where the greatest amount of powder is going is for the manufacturing of ammunition for the civilian market. Companies such as Winchester, Remington, Speer/CCI, Federal Hornady are using most. Throw on top of that all the small remanufactured ammunition companies across the country and the demand for powder is extremely high. There are signs of an easing in this extreme demand. More ammunition is found on the shelves today than there was 8 months ago. Primer orders are dropping off. Finally, gun sales are way down today compared to recent times. Having worked in retail in the past, we saw similar situations with ammunition and primers. Those periods lasted a maximum of 18 months. We are currently into this about 18 months. If historical trends follow through, then we should be seeing an easing in this extreme demand soon.
Thanks,

Shoot Straight

I don't believe it is near an end. I wish someone would explain why all you can find is 1lb cans because it looks like profit motives to me
That's an easy one. They make more money on 1lb containers than they do 8lb jugs. That combined with the fact that every time a 8lb jug hits the shelf, it never has time for the dust to even settle before its heading out the door. Retailers are jacking up the price to silly numbers on 1lb containers and folks are just not falling for it.

ive been saying this for eons....its marketing. they are realigning their way to make more money and part of it is squeezing you into what they want you to buy, how much, and when.

Yet a couple months ago you didn't see rifle powder either...

Its cyclical, and laggy. First to go was the loaded ammo. When that was gone, people went after the reloading supplies. The factories now have to replenish stocks of loaded ammo, once those are back to normal levels (which has pretty much already happened), they will replenish stocks of reloading supplies (pretty much everything is back except for shotgun/pistol powder).

A couple months ago not a lb of rifle powder to be found, I walked into a store a month ago in OH, and they had just about every rifle powder I'd ever heard of in 1lb, some in 8lb, and even had 1lbers of International Clays. Also had 8lb kegs of Red Dot out the wazoo.

The owner of my reloading supply store told me the reason for the powder shortage is because last year there were no shells to be had at the big box stores. They bitched the loudest (and have the most money) so they are getting the new shells this year while we reloaders are seeing a shortage of the powder that they are basically sending to the big box stores in the form of new shells. He also told me he heard that the Wal-Mart in Sparta had their outdoor/garden area filled to the brim with flats of shells for The Grand. He was quoting someone else on that.

Don't know how true any of this is but I know he would not tell me any false information either.

Guess those of you heading to Sparta can check for yourselves.

Tim

P.S. Good Luck to all those shooting at The Grand.

Don't discount the upcoming elections and the 2016 election. There's still plenty of opportunity's to get in on the frenzy. The, sky is falling pundits, are just taking a much needed R&R .

Shotgun Powder, meant for reloading use, is about as close to the bottom of ATK's food chain as you can get.

Tim, If the big box stores have the most money and bitched, then why is Walmart contuning to sell the Federal value packs at a discounted price of $19.94, when Winchester and Remington are at $26 plus. Is this a reduction from Federal or Walmart?

The powder backorders are just now being filled and it will take a while longer. Winter will help decrease the drive for powder in the Northern states.

Let hope it's different next Spring, and in the mean time lets also pray some idiot doesn't do something political or threatening to gun owners and start the run all over again!
