If shooting isn't expensive enough I gotta go and builde a drag car. Oh well; let the fun begin! 2000 Mustang, small-block, single turbo (kinda large), very bad attitude (1500 HP). Wish me luck. Life insurance is paid. Bill
Get some pointers from Robert Hight. ;-)
Sure is ugly!
Good start, but obviously a long way to go ... The tubs look like they are in there right, lets get that roll cage sitting in the back welded up and in place ... Good luck ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
Outlaw 10.5?
Probably closer to X275. @320090T: Do you think lipstick would help? LOL
I hate to tell you this, but that thing is a long way from a race car. Good luck and I hope that you have not run out of money at this point. Trevor Dawe.
Not a thing. They all start at this point. It is a lengthy build but safety is first and foremost. If I get hurt it will hard to fund it by winning shoots! LOL More pics will follow.
I have had a few and they all look like that at some stage of the game, the finished product is what really matters ... Time doing it right is time well spent ... Good Luck ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
more fun driviig and building than paying the bills
Thank you WPT. It does have a ways to go but I am shooting for next year.
Here is a pic of the tubs on my 72 Camaro with 22 inch wide Mickey Thompsons. Jim
They look great! Is it a 70 or 71?
New additions to the build!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
More pics from the build!!!!!!!!!!!!
She's taken shape
Amazing how much money you can dump into these projects isn't it
Now don't lose interest, and shelve it, that happens to way too many of these ( voice of experience)
Looks like you are making headway ... That cage is over the top, thats for sure ... Nice car in the making ... Keep up the good work ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
The picture of the motor in the car looks odd. Forgive me if I am wrong, but is that typical in drag cars to have the headers going forward and over the top like that? Is that how they are going to be mounted, possibly because of space needed? Or, is it temporary, because I see you still have the hook on it yet?
Looks like it is for a turbo installation
Headers up and forward likely for a twin turbo setup.
Ah, never thought of that. Yep, Turbo's need exhaust, duh.
What cubic inch is your mill?? I've always been impressed what they get out of Windsor platforms..especially 347 strokers
Because of the slight delay in compression from a Turbo, from the exhaust driving the Turbo, instead of RPM's from the likes of a Blower, why chose the Turbo power instead, when in drag racing 1000th's of a second counts. Is this for classification restrictions?
Turbo lag is not the issue it used to be in drag racing anymore. What with rev limiters, trans brakes and nitrous to spin up the turbo. Plenty of really mean turbo cars out there now days.
My race car. Street legal. AJ
Is there a pressure gate, or something of this sort to relieve the excess pressure in the Turbo System. If I remember, it was called something with the term "Gate". I remember the loud pops it created.
She's looking pretty! No lipstick needed now.
Yes they have to have waste gates to vent off excess pressure over the preset PSI limit the owner sets
With the advancements of computer controls for the boost turbo lag is practically a thing of the past. You can launch the car at a pre-determined amount (mainly because of small tires) and then ramp it up to maximum or whatever the track will hold. This car will utilize a single 88mm tubro and the exhaust will exit through the left fender behind the tire via a 5 inch pipe. The headers are essentially designed in an upward fashion to allow a horizontally mounted radiator with dual electric fans. I considered methanol but it is very caustic and more costly. Methanol does eliminate the need for a cooling system because it does not get hot. Most running it remove the freeze plugs. Thank you all for the words of encouragement. Bill Weaver
Texshooter,
Nice ride! Buddy had one just like it. He drag raced it one time but was terrified of shelling the tranny. Very quick!!!!!! Well into the elevens. Have you run yours?
Ken
What cubic in. mill are you using Bill?? I've always been impressed with the 347 Strokers on the Windsor block
Ken 11.1 sec @126. Tranny only cost $18,000 if you blow it. Damn wheel I scratched is like $2,000 this is more expensive than Trap shooting. Next plan is re-program computer and get new down pipes. And roll cage needed for 10 sec car. AJ
Can you get that Ford engine to pass smog inspection for street use?
I have not run this yet. The build is exciting though. This combination should run in the low 8's high 7's around 190 MPH. All of this is dependant on the composition of the stones; brass or composite! The trans is a JW glide and it is capable of handling 2000 HP. The CI of this package is less than 350 and projected to make in the 1500 HP range. Take care all. Bill
I know the fun is in the build, but you could just buy one of these. I imagine it would run similar times, but would still be street legal. Oh, it might cost a little more, but you would be saving by not having to haul it to the track. LOL
Will we see it run on "Pass Time"?
1500 horsepower ........right, Well I guess I'll drive over to the gun club and break three or four hundred straight from the 27 yard line.
Ummm BeBop...a fully built twin turbo small block Ford can touch 1500hp easily..especially if N2O is thrown into the mix or the alky
It's slow but fun!! LOL
parachute.. that thing goes in the 9's. what is under the hood. motordoc
582 stroker, pg,all the good stuff
seems that alot of trapshooters own race cars. Birdtracker
Yup..lots of neat wheels among gun guys..love my 454SS
Calvin, my brother has two of the 454SS in Black. He recently purchased an engine, I think he said it was a 512CI that dynoed at 810 HP that he plans to stick in one of them. The bad part is, He won't let me drive em. LOL Jackie B.
Hmm..I wonder why Jack ; ) might it be that you have more lead in your right foot than a flat of reloads : ))??
oh yea! Birdtracker
Just 1 of many of my childhood memories living in a drag racing family
Just a few more over 20 -30 years drag racing in the division 1 on East coast
Love the old funnies!!!! I used to flog the heck out of a 67 440 Charger every weekend. Now I just drive to the track and run the 'vette in brackets. Still plenty fun!!!!!!!
Thank you guys and gals for the encouraging words. I have built many street/drag cars for others but I have always dreamed of having my own drag/racecar. I decided to do that hence the build. I have restored many Mustangs over the last 35 years and still keep a shop full of them in various capacities. I love the racing but the concors restorations are dear to me also. There is a lot of gratification in returning one of these cars (regardless of the lineage) to pristine condition. Just one more thing; I am posting a couple of pics of my next driver. I wanted one for a while and finally found it. Not too many of these left it seems.
BAFLSTAND, I sold one of those six years ago and it was a GT and had a 351 in it. Body was in really good shape but needed paint. I let the guy have it for $700.00. He stuck a battery in it, put a quart of transmission fluid in the oil and ran it for 15 minutes. Drained the oil, put a new filter and oil in it and drove it home. I sure wish I had kept it now but at the time I had too many cars in the yard. Two 89 Mustangs, 66 mustang, 78 TransAm, 74 Grabber GT, two 51 Chevy PU's plus my wife's mustang and my 97 f150. I got tired of listening about it all so cleaned house. I still have the 66 and wish I still had the Grabber. LOL Jackie B.
I could have bought a Ranchero with a 428 CJ and 4 speed back in 1976, cheap. Too bad I didn't do it. AJ
Baflstang - I see it is a GT, but what is the powerplant? 351, 428, 429? I have my eye on one sitting behind a barn, with a 428SCJ 4 speed. Custom paint (old and worn), custom interior (equally old and worn), aftermarket wheels and tires, and has been mostly sitting behind the barn for about 25-30 years. It was used as a farriers truck for a few years, then when his back gave out, as a farm truck/transportation until there were too many kids to haul in it, then it got parked. It gets flashed up occasionally, but hasn't been on the road (officially) for years.
I am also trying to get the original owner of a 1966 Bronco Sport Custom to at least talk to me about selling it. It has a full size tin top, the bucking bronco interior, bucket seats, 289, 3 speed floor shift, dealer installed flares on all 4 corners, 1100-15 tires on factory 10" steel wheels, 9" rear end and Dana 44 front. It has been parked in his yard since his mid 30s daughter quit driving it when she was 20 or 21.
This Ranchero is equipped with a 351-C with a 2 barrel carb. I plan on leaving it in but may convert to a 5.0 EFI with an AOD. The EFI conversions are simple and make a fun ride even better. The 428 you are referring to must be a 68-69. I have seen a couple of these but they are quite scarce. Definitely a good buy and collectible. The last ride on my "bucket list" is a first generation Bronco. My current driver is a '90 Bronco with 400K miles. It is ready for the road anytime and has truly been one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. Good luck on your chances. Where are you located? I found a '70 Torino GT convertible pacecar. There were several (6-8) of these made and they were all identical. 429 CJ, AT, AC, PS, PDB,POWER SEAT, TACH, ROLLBAR, EXTRA COOLING, ETC. Bill Weaver
here is my little project my son and I are working on, got the doorjambs and doors painted and back on this weekend. Birdtracker
Time consuming. Very nice. Bill
My plans are to paint wednesday. It will probably take the rest of the winter to get it back together and be able to get it out once the salt is off the roads. Birdtracker
I mentioned one more vehicle in my "bucket list" and it just appeared. I found it sitting in a yard where I was working and it had a for sale sign in the window. It is a 1976 BRONCO EXPLORER with a 302, PS, PDB, and AT. Very minimal rust and no structural issues. Look out beach!!!!!!!!!
Bill
my pride & joy. I get a lot of looks
Here's my toy, an 89 Vette 383 stroker. I "beat the heat" in the second pic. Got a T-shirt to prove it!. Lingenfelter super ram intake, comp's cam, headers, 355 positraction w/ beefed 700r4 trans. A real sleeper!
I find it interesting that people doubt the HP that can be made these days. I quit motorcycle drag racing in the mid 90's. My funny bike with turbo and 4 stage nitrous made 1000 HP on a superflow dyno with a 82 cu in engine. Of course it was hard keeping it together. At the time billet heads and various parts available now were not there to be had.
Yeah the stuff now a days just blows my mind. 400 hp out of a streetable Ford Lima 2300, iron block NASCAR motors turning 9 grand, sure is different than the 50s, or the early 90s for that matter.
She's looking good, bunch of work isn't it
It sure looks like you are doing it right ... Nice, want to see the finished product ... I got this itch starting all over again ... lol ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
The next pics will be of the engine build. The pistons will be here Monday as will the cam and lifters. Off to the balancer and then assembly.
WOW!!!!! A lot of nice rides!!!! Baflstang, I'm not a Ford man, but you do beautiful work....should be a great car when you are done. I've been drag racing for 30 years & am racing a 73 Dodge Dart with a 496cid big block, 2spd, & 33x15 rubber on it....it was my high school car!!!! With a few mods... I am looking for a 68 to 76 dart body to build one with my son (prefer 68 or 69). If someone knows of a shell for sale....let me know....or if you know of a company that builds a fiberglass body would be great... Thanks!!!!! Dick
baflstang: your build seems to be moving along pretty well. I got some more of mine back together. I drove it down the driveway last saturday. Few more things and maybe I will take it to town!.
