Heinz plays ketchup with green gang
Here’s the Track’s stand on global warming: Until the celebrity windbags quit blowing hot air about saving the planet, the greening of America doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell.

Singer Sheryl Crow wants us to spare just a square per flush and wear something called a “dining sleeve.” But when will she cut down on her gas-guzzling tour buses, tractor-trailers and cars?

And now here comes Teresa Heinz, she of the $35 million Gulfstream V, the speed boats - including hubby John Kerry’s 42-foot-long Scaramouche that gets less than one mile per gallon - and a fleet of fuel-sucking SUVs.

Ta-raaaaay-za’s the covergirl for N magazine’s upcoming green issue where she lectures us about how we can save Mother Earth. (Part II of the enviro-talk, God help us, continues in the next issue.)

Heinz and her senatorial spouse, as you are so aware, are peddling a new tome titled “This Moment on Earth: Today’s New Environmentalists and their Vision for the Future.” Even the title sounds wind-baggy. It was, however, printed on recycled paper.

In her Q & A with N editor Bill Ferrall, T gets excited about a lithium battery device, partly manufactured in Massachusetts, that gets 150 miles “to the gallon” when installed in a Toyota Prius.

“That’s amazing,” Heinz said. “It is a plug-in, so you plug it into the house.”

Seen any orange extension cords running out of 19 Louisburg Square these days?

But even though the ketchup heiress and her spouse jet between five - count ’em five - energy-sucking megamansions, Heinz puts her foot down when it comes to jumping on Nantucket’s perfect-lawn bandwagon. She says she refuses to spray the grass at her seaside home with chemicals that might damage the aquifer.

“I can have a lawn that’s half decent. I don’t want perfection there. We have to keep our water safe,” she said. “There’s a lot of toxicity in our houses from sprays and things we use.”

Like, say, Gulfstream-Vs?

Anyway, we rang up T’s peeps to ask if the condiment queen will be trading in her jet to fly coach, and we’re told that she’s “relying on teleconferences.”

Hmmm.

Her chief of staff Jeffrey Lewis reports the senatorial spouse also recycles, has energy-efficient light bulbs and double-paned windows, Energy Star appliances, favors organic and locally grown produce and relies on recycled paper for her office work. And the Heinz-Kerrys reportedly have added three hybrids to their fleet, including a Ford Escape, one of which is garaged in Boston.

No word on whether the Scaramouche and the other powerboats will be in dry-dock this year. We have a feeling the answer to that one may be An Inconvenient Truth . . . .

Do you know Global Warming is a fact? It is and it is happening right now. If it didn't we all would be dead. What they don't tell you there is also Global Cooling and the two tend to cancel each other out.
