    I need help with a word that I heard one of my customers say today in regards to all of the roundabouts that have sprung up in my area. The word is "retardedly". He used it to explain how he felt about how some of the people in this area seem to approach these crossings in traffic. He said: "There are a lot of folks that approach those thur roundabouts real retardedly".

    I don't think this is a real word, but I would like some input here.

    simply making an adjective into an adverb. A common bastardization.

    I am almost certain that the word was derived from the word "retarded" and that word was born in Washington D.C. and also many State Capitols where it remains a common word to this very day............Uncle Sam, Pa.

    So....this is a "proper" adjective? Don't adjectives have to also have their own place in the Dictionary??

    As you used it, "retardedly" is an adverb, Joe. Regardless of it being "proper," it ain't nice to use...in sensitivity to folks who have mental retardation.

    "retardation"=noun

    Roundabouts/traffic circles same same. When I was driving truck I was in Delaware and I was in the circle doing about twenty and there was two old ladies sitting at an entrance in a Nash Metropolition. They let me go by with the tractor and pulled out right under my trailer. I ended up with the front tandem on thier hood. She told the cop she didn't see the trailer.

    It would appear that The Lit has established himself as an authority on the subject. Self made man?

    WASHINGTON--President Obama signed a law Tuesday mandating Federal statutes will no longer use the term "mental retardation;" the replacement phrase is "intellectual disability."

    THE WHITE HOUSE

    Office of the Press Secretary

    To be politiclly correct you should say intellectually disabled.
