Looking at a Winchester Super X1 Trap 12 Ga w 30" Brrl for sale locally at $750.
Have not heard a lot of good about Winchester Shotguns, having never owned one

"Have not heard a lot of good about winchester shotguns" Apparently you have never heard of a model 12.

There is a very dedicated following for the Super X-1. Many feel that it is the best semi-auto shotgun ever made. Value depends on a number of factors; being condition, serial number (later numbers are usually better - 80,000 area), stage 1 or stage 3 trigger, barrel rib attached with a screw?, stainless vs blued internals. The later guns had the upgrades. Parts and upgrades are available from a couple of sources. The bolt buffer and various springs should be replaced. Bill Malcolm

Winchester has not made a preferred quality shotgun for quite a few years. Your "experts" were probably talking about the current guns labeled "Winchester".

However, the Model 12 pump, Super X-1 semi auto, and Model 21 side by side, all have a dedicated group of followers. The Super X-1 and Model 21 have nearly a cult like group of users who swear by their quality and original design. The Super X-1 has a machined frame and quality barrel. Although heavier than most semi autos of today, they are well balanced and a desired target gun. Unfortunately, quite a few are being "parted out" for after market sale, as they tend to bring more money overall when sold in parts . Remanufactured, stainless, and new parts can still be bought through a number of companies, Nu-line, Wrights, and others. Don't be afraid of a Super X-1, but they usually demand a good price, especially a target model. The recoil buffer should be immediately replaced if you buy a safe queen

The fact that most of the gun parts are machined parts not stamped out by the gigzillion from Yugo hoods makes them pretty unique. Then there are only 1/3 of the parts in the gun as compared to brand X and generally had rather nice wood too. My biggest complaint was that they launch fired shells into the next zip code which was hard to get under control in doubles. Very well made gun.....breakemall....Bob Dodd
