I just picked up 3 full cans of this at a local gun show. Looks good and smells normal. Does anyone know anything about this powder? I need load data to make trap loads. I usually load 1 1/8 oz. shot, AA hull, Win 209 primer and WWAA12 wads. They are 1 lb steel cans with the pop bottle size screw cap. The label says "For target and standard shot shell loads". There is no zip code or UPC code on the label, if memory serves UPC codes started in 1975 and zip codes in the early 1960's. I did not guess it was that old when I made the buy.

It was a good ball powder for Handicap loads and had lower pressures than 452. Find an older Winchester reloading manual for recipes.

From Winchester loading data Nov 1976 your components, 23.5grs. 1200 fps 8500 lups pressure. Go to 25grs. for 1255 fps and 9500 lup. For a field load 28 grs. 1330 fps and 10100 lup.

If you contact Hodgden they will send you a copy of old Winchester loading manual.

Application in Higher velocity Handicap loads and as stated great 20 ga powder. It was advertised as what Winchester put in factory 20 target loads. Anyone every use this powder in 28 ga or pistol loads with good luck. Burn chart would put it in the area of a good powder for those two applications as well.

Here's some 1 1/8 loads with the AA wad, AA hull and AA209 primer:

    23.5 grains of 473AA gives you 1200 fps @ 8,500 LUP

    25 grains of 473AA gives you 1255 fps @ 9,500 LUP

    28 grains of 473AA gives you 1330 fps @ 10,100 LUP

From the 14th edition of Winchester guide

Thanks for the help. I spent about 20 minutes searching the web and did not find much. I suspected some on this web site would have old load manuals and be willing to share some charge weights. If I was not such a frugal SOB I would have just gone out and bought some Red Dot. (I say frugal, my wife says I am cheap). Not sure why it is I can't pass up a deal like this. But it seems like I almost never see reload components on sale.

Here is a copy of pages 16 and 17 from Winchester 10th Edition Revised 1989 Reloading Components Catalog. If you can't read it PM me your e-mail address and I will send you a copy of the file.
