How can you tell whether a 28 ga. Winchester 101 has the so-called "baby frame" - downsized for the 28 ga. vs. a 20 ga. frame fitted with 28 ga. barrels? The blue book lists both and the "baby frame" models carry a higher price tag. Unless you can compare the two side-by-side (which I can't) is there some way to figure out by serial # or some other marking if a 28 ga. has the smaller frame? Help appreciated... Best Regards, Ed

The true Baby Frame guns will jump out at you as being very diminutive when you get one in your hands as compared to the 20 ga frames, there will be no doubt. In terms of measurements the 20 ga frame will measure 1 7/16" across the
underside of the receiver while the baby frame guns measure 1 3/16".The only
baby frame guns were 27" 28 ga versions of which there were 250 ordered by Olin
with 248 leaving the plant.I am not aware of any other versions on this frame
other than the Quail Specials which were straight grip guns in both the 410 and 28 ga.Classic Doubles also made a baby frame 28 ga with 28" barrels and win chokes. They are hard to find and you will pay unless you get very very lucky.Hope this helps...
