Joe and Barack's Tax Problems. I was stunned to see some document showing Joe the Plumbers' tax problems on my 10pm (CT)newscast on the local NBC affiliate in Chicago on Thursday night. They have very little time for any national news and they actually spent time on Joe the Plumbers' tax problems. Amazing!

But when an actual candidate — Barack Obama — released his tax returns, which on their face seemed to show an ethics violation of Illinois law, the press couldn't care less.

Just to remind you, Illinois prohibits state legislators from taking speaking fees, and Barack reported "speaking fees.":

Apparently, as an Illinois state legislator through 2004, Barack was prohibited from taking honoraria for speaking under the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act.

But what about Barack Obama’s 2000 and 2002 tax returns?

2000: On his 2000 Schedule C-EZ, Barack reported that he received $16,500 as a “Foundation director/Educational speaker.”

2001: On his 2001 Schedule C-EZ, Barack reported $98,158 from a Chicago law firm, Miner, Barnhill, for “Legal services/attorney” (and nothing for speaking).

2002: On his 2002 Schedule C, Barack reported $34,491 for “LEGAL SERVCES / SPEAKING FEES.”

These “speaking fees” are in addition to the amounts that Barack was paid as an employee, a lecturer at the University of Chicago, reported on the first page of his 1040s.

The Illinois Governmental Ethics Act (apparently last changed in 1995) provides:

    (5 ILCS 420/2-110)

    Sec. 2-110. Honoraria.

    (a) No member of the General Assembly shall accept any honorarium.

    (b) As used in this Section:

"Honorarium" means a payment of money to a member of the General Assembly for an appearance or speech . . . .

I really don't blame Obama for not addressing this; he released his tax returns after all. The problem is the press, which seems to be having more trouble than usual doing its job this season.

As I've said before, the best solution to the problem is integrating the newsrooms politically.

It's sickening the way the "elite" go after the people who produce goods and services in this country. We need more plumbers and fewer "community organizers".

Bad news. It looks like due to too much corn being converted to ethanol we can't feed everybody. As such, we can only provide food to ONE of the following groups. We will conduct a survey to see which group gets to survive.

    1. Lawyers.

    2. Community Organizers.

    3. Politicians.

    4. College Professors.

    5. Those who can't produce a legitimate birth certificate from somewhere.

    6. Plumbers.

    Who do you pick?

    6. Plumbers. This really happened, I woke up Friday morning and turned the left handle hot water lever on, water ran for a few seconds and then stopped, turned on the cold water, nothing. Dam!! Went in basement to check pump. Pump warm but not running. Dam again, did well go dry or did pump go out. At 8am called random plumber out of yellow pages, he apoligized saying he couldn't get out there till 3pm. Great, come on over. Guy showed up and told me pump was bad, but he had 1 on truck. Replaced pump and was gone by 4:45pm. I've got water again.

I'm one happy camper! Great service, provided a service I really needed and wanted.

    Bisi,

You should have called a lawyer and had him sue the pump manufacturer. Of course you wouldn't have had any water for a few years and when you did get some the lawyer would get a third of it.

Bisi, did you ask to see his license and if he owed any back taxes. Hope what he charged you did not put him into that $1/4 mil tax bracket.

To answer the original posted question "Why is the Press Going After Joe the Plumber when" is because that poor guy asked a question of BO and got a straight from the heart answer...to paraphrase "to spread the wealth...". A very big oops on the Dems part. So, the liberals with the press behind them move into diversion mode and make 'Joe' the bad guy.

When was the last time we got a straight answer from either side let alone the far left. Can you say 'SOCIALISM'?

What a major FUBAR on BO's part. Far more then just a gaffe.

It's quite simple: the message by Obama was so simple "TO DISTRIBUTE THE WEALTH" and so powerful that they had only one recourse (the usual liberal/secular progressive way) was to attempt to discredit the messenger (shoot the messenger).

I think Joe the plumber is a jerk.

But Republicans can write him in on their ballot when they vote on Nov 5th.

I hear on the radio that Joe is making big bucks selling T-shirts off the internet! He grossed more selling his shirts than his main business!

'joes, or "shorties". he said that if they had no more self respect than that then to hell with them.

llThe tax in question, I am told was a "personal Property Tax" Which is what I paid when I was in business. It is levied on your desk, chair, typewriter, computer, etc.

I did not know about it either till an associate told me. They just expect you to know about it and pay.

This was in a different area, but I'll bet the same deal.
