"Democracy is a form of government that cannot long survive, for as soon as the people learn that they have a voice in the fiscal policies of the government, they will move to vote for themselves all the money in the treasury and bankrupt the nation."

Heard it many times but don't know who said it. I would guess somebody like Tocqueville. Is it true. Yes. The evidence is present day America.

They say 50% of Americans don't pay income taxes anymore and they are voting for Ojackass, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, et al to give em more stuff from the rest of us suckers who are still paying taxes.

It has been true throughout history, whenever such a form of government has been tried. It is also happening today, in America. The question is whether or not Americans totally succomb to the lure of of the idea of "freebies for all" or whether we, as a people, wake up and realize that there really is no such thing as "free" from the government and someone has to pay for it-not least with a total loss of freedom.

Democracy is doomed to fail. All forms of government will fail.

We are not so unique. Is there any country and/or civilization that has succeeded forever?

Each form of government will rot either through corruption at its head; or, due to the immorality and selfishness of its citizenry.

It was Socrates who spoke of the problems with democracy. Here is a quote from another source:

"Socrates implies that the very nature of democracy makes it a corrupt political system. Bitter experience has taught him that most people rest content with a superficial understanding of the most urgent human questions. When they are given great power, their shallowness inevitably leads to injustice."

And so in lies the problem.

“Democracy is a form of government that cannot long survive, for as soon as the people learn that they have a voice in the fiscal policies of the government, they will move to vote for themselves all the money in the treasury and bankrupt the nation.”
    —Karl Marx
    (1818-1883)

    Earlier and slightly different wording:

“When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”
    —Benjamin Franklin
    (1706-1790)

    "Remember, democracy never lasts long.
It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself.
There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide."

    Quote by: John Adams
(1735-1826) Founding Father, 2nd US President
Source: letter to John Taylor, April 15, 1814

Among a people generally corrupt liberty cannot long exist."

    Quote by:
    Edmund Burke
(1729-1797) Irish-born British statesman, parliamentary orator, and political thinker
Source: Letter to the Sheriffs of Bristol, 3 April 1777
