    Think about this fact -

70% of the US budget goes to Defense, Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, and interest on the debt?

Oh, hell....lets just forget about all this ruckus and let the country go bankrupt.

Instead of worrying about hostile nations or terrorists and taking care of the needy, sick and elderly, we can just let the whole mess slide off the edge and start all over again.

Where's the education department? Last I heard it's budget was higher then the defense budget. And its our biggest failure.

Lets start with the bloated federal workforce. Move on to those able to work and still on welfare. Finish by "tweaking" the SS system.

timberfaller - You might want to get your ears checked. You are off by a factor of 14.

    Department of Defense - $664 billion;

Department of Education - $47 billion.

Can't argue with you Ahab, but the cuts should be across the board. Waste in each catagorie should be identified. The military wastes a lot of money, basically equipment and materials. Ever have an Army or Corps of Engineers contract? Fraud in M/M and SS is so large they can't even begin to get a handle on it, and any bureaucrat will admit it. But it is political suicide to try to change it. Term limits would help in that regard.

And of course the federal workforce is extremly bloated. Ever been to a HUD office? Most of those people have the desire of an omeba.

There is something to chew on keets, This is just the Departments budget. Notice 2011 est 71 billion for 5000 employees in 07! How many do they have today?

I don't see where your figure of 47 billion is at.

    Enlighten me please.

While your at it list all 50 states DOE budgets and bring back the totals.

The department of Education should be eliminated. It has done nothing.

Tax dollars go to DC and after sticky fingers maul them to death a pittance is returned to the states.

And our students score ever lower on tests.

Further insight at the above link.

It only took me 5 minutes to find it using a search engine.

Its amazing what you can find when you just look it up.

While I was looking up the DOE budget, I came across Oregon's DOE budget, it was like 36 billion for the year.

Wonder what the other 49 states spend?

So why do we need a 5000+ Federal department?

Won't take very many states to get close to that 664 billion DOD budget.

Why should Social Security have to be cut? It's supposed to be self-sustaining.

Oh, that's right, Obama finally acknowledged it isn't, since he said Social Security checks could not be issued if the government got shut down. No more money, Social Security lives hand to mouth as a giant ponzi scheme. No money is put into an account and saved. Your money goes to pay someone else, not you.

This is because the Dems could not keep their greedy hands off of the money, and raided it. Plus started using Social Security to pay people who never paid into it.
