    Hello:
Where did you take basic training and Ait? I took basic training at Fort Lewis Washington, and Ait at Fort Sill Oklahoma.

At Fort Lewis, I was there from Oct 29, to January 8. I saw the sun only around 10 times. One day I look up on a nice clear day and saw snow capped Mount Rainier, beautiful sight. The barracks were from WW ll. Always worried that they would catch fire as it would have only taken minutes to burn down.

Fort Sill was nice, wake up in the morning and temp could be 30, and by noon 60. We were in what looked like an apartment building at the fort.

We use to go to Tacomma near Fort Lewis on weekends if we got pass. At fort Sill we'd go to Lawton. I had two of the greatest jobs the Army could offer. I was a company clerk in Headquarters, and then got a promotion and was in Supply. Both were great jobs.

August 1967 - Basic, Fort Campbell Kentucky. The 101st was just moving their entire Division to Cam Rahn Bay. Pretty exciting times for a raw recruit from Anoka Minnesota! Talk about hand-to-hand combat, and that was just at the PX. They were all mad!!!

AIT - Fort Polk Louisiana - North Fort - Tigerland!

I was unfamiliar with Fort Polk so I checked a map. Fort Polk was noted as 'Inactive'!!!

If they were ever to give the world and enema, they would place the tube in Leesville, LA

    Long ago and far away!

Air Base Ground Defense II @ Ft. Dix, New Jersey

Enjoyed the camaraderie of many airmen & soldiers.

Fort Knox for basic, we too still had the WWII barracks. Had to have a fire watcher patroling inside and out every night. Compared to the January weather I left behind in Northern Michigan, it was down right balmy. Still lots of mud made things pretty miserable at times.
OJT at Ft Bragg with the 82nd, M109 Howitzers, big boomers! lol Hotter than hell too for this northern boy.

Hey Steve when you were in Sill did you ever make it out to the Wichita Mountains Nat Wildlife Refuge?

My brother managed that for about 15 years, it was after your time but it was a cool place

I always thought Oklahoma was flat lands except for the Ouashitia Mtns in the SE

But I thought Texas was flat lands too until I moved here 33 years ago

Dusty, I was at Fort Polk in 64 and I remember Leesville. Then Fort Dix and then Ft Campbell. Whole Engineer Battalion went oto Nam in 65 by Troop ship. Landed at Cam Rahn Bay. Cam Rahn today is a beautiful Tourist vacation spot as well as Nha Trang. Beautiful Beach.

I've been accused of being in the Navy during which time if we didn't have wind or oars we didn't go anywhere

Basic was Fort Lewis Washington, Jan 1969 and never did get a pass - saw it rain, snow, hail, sleet, and sun shine, all in the same day.

AIT in Fort Ord Calif. Got 2 passes from there and that was fun.

They took me off of the Viet Nam transfer list twice, and finally sent me to Germany!! How about that!!

Basic: Ft. Campbell, Ky. AIT: Ft. Poke, La. There was a guy in my unit who would go to Leesville every week-end and get a penicillin shot every Mon. Said he just couldn't help himself. We called him pop's because he was older then the rest of us. Looks like he would have known better.
