When did "recipe" start as a reloading term? I've been away from reloading for a few years and now see "recipe" being used to describe a combination of powder, primer, etc.

Back in the day it was just "What LOAD are you using?"

When did this cooking term sneak in there? And where did it come from?

    No guesses...I want to KNOW.

Don't know when it started but according to Webster, the definition of Recipe fits perfectly.

    rec·i·pe

A set of instructions for making something from various ingredients...

A formula or procedure for doing ...

I don't think you have to bake it, or cook it, to be a recipe. That would be a recipe for disaster! LOL

Every since we have to make every term we use more elegant than it need be to impress others.

Probably the evolution of wine and whiskey. You gotta taste the dam bouquet in the wine to get the same drunk as with whiskey.

<blockquote><I>"When did "recipe" start as a reloading term?"</I></blockquote>Probably when the people who use it started having trouble remembering the word "formula".

Like "Operator" is now the term of choice for someone shooting a gun.

I ticked off an off duty cop at a gunshop when he said he was an "operator" for a local agency. Goaded him by asking if he was a 911 operator.

When I was a kid, "recipe" used outside of its normal context meant illegal homemade booze.

Now it's being used for a load. Bet some gun magazine writer coined it.

I believe it was coined by the person who minted "smokepole". I just can't remember who it is. Sorry.

About the same time people started saying the word - "Caps."

    Usage in a trapshooting idiom:

"Hey Wally - I got a new recipe for caps, guh huh, guh huh!"

    That's him.

Back in the mid 60's my cousins and I reloaded shot-shells in my Grandma and Grandpa cellar. One day we got back from hunting and all we had was 6 rabbits. Granny said "you boys better change the recipe in those shells".

...or "hoNe in", even though the phrase is "hoMe in" (as in homing pigeon or homing beacon), "aks" instead of "ask, "should OF" instead of "should HAVE" and "very unique" even though the word "unique" means "one of a kind" (very one of a kind??)

Because its harder to spell than data for most skeet shooters.

Fifteen two and a pair is four.

Fads come and go, remember when all the gun writers were describing self defense as "serious social purpose". Or the weather prognosticators describing storms as "heavy duty weather"? After awhile the novelty wears off, everybody agrees that it sounds corny and it goes away.

I dunno if "I could Care Less" or if "I Could Not Care Less" but the 2nd expression seems more accurate. Happy Thanksgiving anyway!

What about I'm going to "bring" something to the shop, rather than "take" it to the shop?

I'm going to "run him over", instead of "run over him"? When someone says "run him over" I ask where are you going to "take" him?

I love it when people say "I'm gonna go take a crap!"

Wouldn't you smell better if you left the crap there instead of taking it with you?

Does that mean I have a Unique Recipe irregardless, of your taken it to the loading room, and this defiantly, definitly a Load one of a kind using Longshot
powder wholeheartedly, completely, and uniquely in itsself.
