    What

Recently got a Rem 870 Magnum (from a TS.comer) with a 30" full choke ribbed barrel. Between the underside of the rib and the top of the barrel appears to be a brownish residue of some sort. Overall, the gun has been shot very little. So, what is this gunk ? Perhaps left over from the OEM coatings ?

Then, the question is how the HECK do I remove it? Scrubbing with gun cleaners make a dent, but still seems to be some of it there.

It is Cosmoline grease. Most firearms where shipped with it in the past. Look it up on the net how to remove it. It is some sticky sh$%. Jon

Kerosene usually works to disolve it, or mineral spirits. Anything that's an olifin generally works, not paint thinners as I recall.

Ditto on the mineral spirits for removal of Cosmoline. Did wonders on a mil-surp Mosin/Nagant.

Just read to use WD-40. It is worth a try. Sray it on and let it work. Then run a strip of rag between the ribs, back and forth.
