they have lost a lot of customer confidence in the last few years between what they did to Marlin and some other stuff that should have never left the factory

There have been rumors for a least 25 years of a split between the ammo division and the gun division. I'm trying to figure why a split makes sense now with Remington part of Freedom Group, and Freedom Group going through a IPO.

Maybe a Freedom Group Gun Division and a Freedom Group Ammo Division realigned from the components of the companies in Freedom Group? Are there parts of Freedom Group with better manufacturing facilities and no union issues that could make Remington guns more profitably than they are made in Ilion, NY?

Remington and Barnes Bullets are the only ammo companies in Freedom Group. Maybe Freedom Group wants to focus on gun-making and the ammo components could sold. Several of the companies in Freedom Groups had (have?) really bad balance sheets. A sale of the Remington Ammo could be used to pay down some of that debt.

Maybe this, maybe that. But waiting until after the IPO seems most likely.

    From Wall Street Journal -

'...Eric Wold of Merriman Capital, who covers firearms firms Smith & Wesson (SWB) and Sturm, Ruger (RGR) noted that "the fastest growing part of the industry is handguns" and that Freedom "has none of it."

He said "it is likely to see them make a move and acquire one of those two companies to put themselves in a better position for an eventual IPO..."'

Sell Remington Ammo to raise capital to buy Ruger or S&W? I can see where that would make sense.

    More at the link.

ATK industries (parent company of Federal ammo) would be a logical buyer of Remington's ammunition division. Only if Cerberus group has not screwed up Remington's ammo division beyond salvation.
