Glenlivet or Glenfiddich. Pure scotch...not blended. There IS a difference!

My favorite Scotch around $50 is Balvenie DoubleWood.

    Around $100 is Royal Salute.

Over $100 is Blue Label From J. Walker.

I would think any bottle that is free. Otherwise, Glennfiditch in my opinion. Dewar's White Label would be the less expensive choice.

Lagavulin is THE best if you like a strong taste of peat.

Spring Bank is the very best single malt I ever have had.

All of the above are very good. Another is BENROMACHS.
    A single malt.

Try before you buy. I love MacCallan 12 or 18 year and don't really care for some of the others mentioned above. Many are too smoky for my taste. I'm gonna have to find some Spring Bank to try. Thanks.

If you want a blend, Famous Grouse is excellent. bob

If he's not into singles, go with something that's pretty middle of the road but still good stuff, like Macallen 12, Highland Park 12, Craggenmore 12, or Balvenie Doublewood 12, all about $50 or less and highly rated. Talisker 10 is a little spicier, but good stuff.

Another idea for anyone who likes malt whiskey is Michael Jackson's "Malt Whiskey Companion," a superlative book that tells you everything you ever want to know about malt whiskies and critiques everything you can get in a bottle - about $35.

If he is not a scotch drinker, Johnny Walker Red Label is a good choice. It was Winston Churchill's favorite and he could have any Scotch he desired. Johnny Walker Red is smooth and not strong tasting and I think is the number one brand in the world.

If he is in to the premium brands, Glenlivet is very good and expensive.

Scotch is like sex, non of it is bad but some is better than others. I second Ertz's choice.

When I was in the service I visited relitivs on my fathers side in the Glasgow, Renfrew area. My uncle took me on a few tours of the pubs and most of the local folks drank a scotch called "Grants StandFast" and I brought home a bottle for my Dad. I have recently seen it in our local store. It is a three sided bottle and it is considerably less than $50.00.
