    Hello:
what was, or is the most versatile gun powder ever made? was there ever a gun powder ever made that you could reload 12, 16, 20, 28, 410 gauge, and even handgun loads? if not, what powder could you use to reload the most of the above mentioned?

I'd say Unique is about as close as it gets. Works for lots of shotgun, handgun, and even rifle loads, especially with cast bullets. And don't forget good ole black powder, either. It was the only powder, in one form or another, for ALL existing rifle, shotgun and handgun loads.

I'm sure you mean smokeless powder, but since you didn't make the stipulation, I'll say black powder. It was, and still is, the most versatile powder there ever is/was. ....mike

If you're talking smokeless, I'd have to say unique, although I wouldn't shoot that crap if it was free. even though I have some (grin)

7625 should be in there too, except maybe for the .410? John E.

Unique, except for the 410. It makes a fabulous Caps load in the 12, great in the twenty-eight.

Legendary for cast bullet loads in most any handgun cartridge.

In the good ole days alot of reloaders would reload 12,20,& 28ga with Green Dot powder. Even back then you needed a different powder for the 410 loads. We now know that this powder will not work with all three. The pressures are way off the charts in at least one of these gauges, but I do not remember which one. So this just proves that you need to use current reloading data always. Break-em all. Jeff

When you say the most versatile powder, then Unique is the choice. But the most popular thru the years has to be Red Dot.

The problem is you start compromising when your looking for one powder for all gauges, to include the .410.

Someone messing around and not shooting competitively can compromise, a serious registered 4-gun skeet shooter, cannot!

Unique is probably the most versatile. But, versatile does not mean the best. An adjustable wrench will fit many different bolts but it is not the best for any single bolt.

Unique has a lot of applications and will work with cast bullets and reduced loads in many rifle cartridges and is a great handgun powder. It isn't an appropriate selection for the .410 though. It will work in a large variety of shotshell loads in other gauges. I'd have to give Unique a vote for the most versatile overall. As for 12 ga target powders, Red Dot has to be the longest run for popularity. I don't remember a time when I didn't have a jug or keg of it around.

Not a shotgun powder. But I am sure that they made more 4831 than any other powder. All my large magnums just loved it. I use to buy it for one dollar a pound. That is right a 50lb cardboard barrel for 50 dollars. Trevor Dawe.
