Just got a Mack's flyer. In it, they are describing a choke tube thusly:

"The Patternmasterâ„¢ Short Range choke tube was developed for in close shooting that would not destroy the intended target. Short Range choke allows the shot cup to protrude from the end of the choke to spread the pattern sufficiently to hit the target in a wider pattern and not destroy the target with too high a density shot stream."

What are they trying to imply, anyway?

Comp-N-Choke makes a .005" oversized choke that they call a spreader choke. It seems to work good for targets inside of 20yrds.

So far, you're missing the point... what does "protrude from the end of the choke" mean??
I mean, EVERY choke allows the cup to "protrude", does it not? ...protrude out to about 10 yards.....

I know what Mack's is all about; I'm a duck hunter first and foremost. I'm questioning the Carlson hype.

They are saying that it( The wad) is slowing in the choke area so the shot can travel without it helping to hold the shot coulumn togather. They truly do work. I thought the patternmaster was it's own company? I wasn't aware that Carlson was making them. Then again, Carlson may have trademarked the name since the other company didn't? Whoi knows. I can tell you that the Patternmaster chokes are a joke for long range gunning. Jeff

I'm wondering if instead of a wad stopping ring/series of rings. Possibly a funnel shaped end section allowing the wad/load to began the spread inside the barrel end?

Plastic wads would fill those rings pretty quick it seems to me? Especially the cheap wads. I say that since I once used those cheapies and had plastic flags flying from my barrel end with a smooth fixed choke. Hap

If "protrude" is the word used, all wads do that hopefully, it's not a good word choice.

Many old-time reloaders will remember the Herter's "Inverter" wads, an innovative design which allowed the wad to exit the barrel _before_ the shot and fly out of the way, thus avoiding any interference whatever. They are made in Waseca, Minnesota, and many of the locals are still pawing through old industrial waste sites in the area, hoping to find just one more overlooked box of them, since they consistently patterned better than anything before or since as anyone who used them will attest.

Why would a duck hunter want a "spreader" choke?? (except for Timber hunting). I always want the tightest pattern I can get. They can be hard to kill stone dead w/ steel, especially at long yardage.
