By my understanding, the advantage of a 34" barrel versus, say a 30" barrel, is the reduced sighting error a longer barrel provides.

However, if you look at the calculation, by similar triangles, a 1/16" sighting error (say your eye - your back sight - is 1/16" off) at 35 yards is (using a 44" total distance between your eye and the front of the barrel for a 34" barrel):

    .0625/44 = x/(35*36 - 44) or 1.72"

for a 30" barrel (using 40" from your eye to end of barrel):

    .0625/40 = x/(35*36 - 40) or 1.90.

So, a 34" barrel gives you a grand total of 3/16" better accuracy at 35 yards.

    So:

    1) I did the calculations wrong.
    2) There's some other factor involved.
    3) There's no practical advantage to a 34" barrel

Which do you think it is?

I think you forgot the change in swing dynamics, and little kids and old women won't be pestering you to shoot it...

Yes there's another factor mine makes me think I've got an advantage. If you want to do all those calculations go ahead I just like the thought of it.

    Really?

There are people on here fighting about who wears pink underwear and you are going to throw this formula out there?

If you are comparing it to a 32" barrel there is probably not much difference. But compare a 34" to a 26".Your formula might say it only adds up to a couple of inches but optically the longer barrel is much better,at least in my opinion.I think 34" or 35" is about perfect for sighting and swinging.I have not tried anything longer.

Parallax error is a reason that a skeet gun is not best for trap. My old B80 had a 22" barrel and a 33" bead to eye distance. My 391 parallel trap has a 30" barrel and a 41" bead to eye distance. That's a 20% reduction in parallax error, which seems more significant.

There are no separate triangles. Your eye the barrel, the beads, etc. form a single straight line. Any error in aiming will appear the same regardless of the length of the barrel. There would only be a difference if your eye were
able to move independently of the gun, as might happen if you were shooting with an unmounted gun.

It looks better, therefore it is better (Mind). That is the "True" advantage. Same thing with porting, 2" high Truss Girder ribs, etc.

    lel cuatro ocho sescenta seis,

I can't comment on the differences in accuracy perceived or otherwise; however there ARE definite advantages in a longer barrel for me.

At 6'4" tall with most of my height in my legs, a longer barrel just feels more comfortable resting on my toe than a short one as I relax a tad between shots.

I'd also point out that the gun manufacturers see an advantage as evidenced by the demand.

I do like math and ciphering tho...

    Long barrels look cooler.

Same reason we all like unsingle barrels.

Mental advantage.....Your supposed to look at the bird not the barrel when shooting. Also as stated resale value.

ABH - have to agree - thought I needed it, bought a new XT combo - don't like the unsingle at all - should've bought the top single one. BAck to my BT 99. (with a 34" bbl)

The 34" tube is in a better position to load when resting on your toe.

Because You can only look good shooting a 34" besides it holds the 7-1/2 pattern better.. But with 8's You better off with a shorter barrel !!! HA HA

No advantage with either one. I've always shot better with a 32"
but the 34" does have better resale.
