He was once the main man. I haven't read anything about him recently.

Greatest shooter of all time. Any arguments?

No argument from me. What makes him the best is that he could adjust to anything: cold, wind, target speeds, etc., and almost go into a mental zone to break targets.

It was widely said that he could self hypnotize. That may or may not be true, but he had/has the most extreme concentration I have ever seen.

When I started he was the one I looked up to. I wished that he shot more just so I could watch him. So smooth with very little gun movement. He was the MAN. Trevor Dawe

Dan still attends the ATA state shoot in Kingsburg, Ca. most of the time, and can be seen at the Livermore Gun Club occasionally. I believe he still holds more Trap & Field awards than any other person. Outstanding!

    mallard,

Sure his name shouldn't have an "E" added to it?

If you want to see him shoot attend the Grand, I would say he is always there and shoots some maybe not all. I was fortunate enough to be squaded with him this past year,2011, at the Grand in Tuesdays doubles. Best doubles score I had all week a 92. The entire squad stayed in the 90's. He ran the first 50 but I belive he ended up with a 97. Smooth and deliberate.

Not to put down Dan...AT ALL, but the smoothest shooter with little effort ever is Steve Carmichael. Leo has been winning majors since his childhood and still does to this day. Dan is/was way, way up there w/the all time greats...period!

Everytime the subject of Dan Bonillas came up, my old trapshootin' buddy (who had spent many years in California as a stunt man) would say "He ought to be good, he's got the eyes of a Yaqui indian!" Never knew if it was true, but it made things more interesting.

As great a shooter that Leo is, back in the 70's, no one came close to Dan in reputation or skill level in trapshooting. He was then, and will always be part of trapshooting folklore. In my opinion he was and will always have the most recognized name in trapshooting, " Bonillas"

I shot around Dan most of the 1970s being a life member of one of the local clubs he frequented as well as the CA State Shoot each year. I saw some truly remarkable shooting skills from him including one 500 bird doubles marathon at Martinez where he shot 497/500 with two hundreds and 3 ninety nines. I stayed in the game long enough to win the B class trophy and still haul stuff around in that bag. I'll admit my win was mainly by attrition......breakemall

Sometimes he is in my bassboat. Here is a picture of a nice one he caught in November.
