How does the average person afford their legal defense? I always wondered how someone like George Zimmerman was able to pay for that.
It must be a big enough problem because former Virginia Attorney General and Gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli has started a law firm with a unique solution. Would you pay $8.33 per month for his service?
If you carry a CCW, also carry a tube of crazy glue, just in case your lawyer is slow getting back to you.
Put it on your lips as the LEO approaches. Remember keep your mouth shut.
I have heard here in Texas that if you shoot somebody even though you where legal if it gets turned over to the grand jury you better plan on $100,000 in legal fees
2. Paid by the system to throw their clients to the wolves.
If I ever had a serious problem (like a manslaughter charge, or aggravated battery with a firearm) I would get the best lawyer I could find. Not a Public Pretender.
I not only have defended myself more than once, I also have the means and the attitude to follow it through if the need were to present itself again. I am a pro self defense person and am willing to defend that philosophy. End of story.
I would rather be tried by 12 than be carried by 6 !
There is no time for talking when your life or property is at stake !
The city police shot a woman yesterday as she turned ( with a gun in her hand)
saying , I'm not going back to jail....Self Defence ? was not the question
at the moment but , some Lawyers would not agree , with possible lost revenue ?
I've read that at least in my home state of Illinois, you will spend the first night in jail no matter what. I have a friend that's a police officer and he said that a person should ONLY say that they were afraid for their life and personal well being when they pulled the trigger.
Most "Home Owners Insurance" Policies provide some legal fees assistance coverage.
The possibility of a civil law suit, brought by the family of the suspect you shot are unavoidable. Having a police report and an opinion by the D.A. that your actions were legal go along way to help defend yourself in court. But, the burden of proof, in a civil trial...wrongful death caused by you...is only 51%...so when the "Parade" of witnesses, that would not talk to the police, come forth in court, you are just about screwed any way you look at it.
These lawsuits and the sympathetic juries, that love to give big settlements to the plaintiff, may be the best form of "gun control" out there. Obama's current push to fill 87 Federal judgeships is what is going to cripple this country for generations to come.
I suggest some reading about the murder case that just concluded in Little Falls, MN. The guy got 2 consecutive life terms without possibility of parole for premeditated cold blooded murder of 2 teen agers. They broke into his house while he sat and watched on his CCTV and recorded everything including the cries and moans as the teen agers laid on the floor wounded. His "clean finishing shots" is what got him 2 lifes. Oh, and he drove his pickup away from the house and parked it across town to entice the burglars into thinking he was not home.
And even if a shooter gets an O.J. Simpson verdict, there is still a civil suit by the family that guarantees pauperhood if the preponderance of the evidence goes against the shooter. Then, there's the lawyers. . .
Defending one's castle can make one feel like Dirty Harry or Ahhhnold, but it has costs.
Using a firearm to protect myself I would certainly try to hole the offender at bay and not pull the trigger. That said, if I had to I would shoot and worry about the legal fees later. There are companies that offer insurance for this type of defense.
I won't buy extra insurance. If I had to pull a gun I'd probably end up dead or behind bars. While I'd rather not die, BEING dead isn't a big concern at this stage of living. Also, prisons aren't all that nice - but living off the state for the decade or so would serve them right for denying my basic rights.
