If I remember the story correctly, she had been in an airplane or glider crash and was hurt pretty bad. She was in a lot of constant pain as a result of the accident and just couldn't stand it anymore. I think she lived in Palm Springs at the time. She was married to the man that built the Primmadona Hotel and casino in Primm, Nevada. Dan Orlich told me she was a very beautiful woman, model I think. She was also one heck of a shooter.

    Mrs. Prim was a model.

She married Ernest J. Primm June 26, 1952 shortly after she began trapshooting.

I believe Evelyn Primm was the first woman to be handicapped to the 24, 25, 26 and 27 yard mark. She was a wonderful shooter not only winning many Ladies trophies but even tying with the men.

She also played a good game of golf and had some of her artwork on display.

She flew sailplanes and once held the altitude record of 32,600 feet in Nevada.

In June 1966 she crashed her sailplane about 12 miles east of Winnemucca, fracturing her right heel and left leg, and had lacerations to her face, arms and neck. She was in flight from Reno to Elko attempting to log enough miles to qualify for the National Soaring Championships in Reno. She was soaring about 14,000 feet and didn't remember anything except being removed from the reckage. Her husband said doctors considered amputating her leg but he brough in seven doctors who saved her from the procedure.

She became an officer in the corporation (Primadonna casino) in 1968.

She divorced Ernest J. Primm, owner of the Primadonna Club and Restaurant (casino) in 1973, after 21 years of marriage. They had two sons.

Her obituary states she died of a sudden illness on October 20, 1975 at the age of 52 in her Palm Springs home. She is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, CA.

Gary did build the casinos at Stateline and still lives in Las Vegas. He has since sold them.

Primm was one of only eight people that shot the 1955 Grand American Handicap from the 27 yard line. Don't hold me to this, but I think she may have been one of the first ten 27-yarders.

    MRS. EVELYN PRIMM
Dark-eyed Mrs. Evelyn Primm of Gardena, Calif. may be the most accurate woman trapshooter of all time. This beautiful former model now rates a 26-yard handicap, the highest for any woman in the history of the sport. Only two men, both with 27-yard handicaps, surpass her. Evelyn took up trapshooting three years ago because "it looked like fun." Evelyn is also a licensed pilot and a good water skier.
    [ SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, March 28, 1955 ]

Aaron Bird, manager of the Amateur Trapshooting Assn., said only eight of the country’s thousands of shooters were 27-yarders this season – one a woman. She’s Mrs. Evelyn Primm, the sharpshooting Reno, Nev., beauty.
Others to fire from the extreme yardage at the “Grand” are Maynard Henry of Los Angeles, president of the ATA; Merle Stockdale of Los Angeles; Arnold Riegger, the stocky airplane plant worker form Seattle, Wash., who was the star of the 1954 “Grand,” Tom Lynott, retired professional from Salt Lake City; Vic Reinders of Waukesha, Wis., the U. of Wisconsin professor; Dan Orlich, of Reno, Nev., and Julius Petty, the fur dealer and duck hunter from Stuttgart, Ark.

Thanks Kenny, anyone else know anything? This lady is a very interesting shooter. She was breaking new ground before any other woman and a heck of a lot of men. Scott

To clear this up Gary Primm is the first son of Ernest J. Primm. Evelyn was Ernest's second wife. Also my mother. She was a wonderful person.
Gary and the rest of kids took over the family business after Dad passed away in 1981.

She had two sons, myself and my brother Roger.

My Mom's 91st birthday would have been tomorrow. She was born June 26, 1923. It's true she took her own life.

Wow! She was way ahead of her time with such talent. Wish I had seen her shoot.

    Mr. Primm,

Thank you for your very personal reply. I'm sorry for the loss of your parents, it's a shame we all become orphans at some time.

    Sincerely, Harv Shell

In one of the articles, it said Merle Stockdale was from Los Angeles. This is wrong.

As far as I know, Merle was a life long Ackley, Iowa resident and the very first shooter to be punched to the 27 yard line in trap.
