There's evidence of cracked receivers on the Remington "Comp" Trap guns...what causes the crack? How do you prevent it? What makes this gun more susceptible to cracking than the 10,000,000 other 870's and or gas operated 1100's?
    Thanks,
    J.C.

I've had two or three 1100 Recievers crack. It's normal for metal to fatigue. If you send it back to remington they will send you a new reciever for about $230.00 I hope this helps you.

Not so on the 870 comp, it is because the barrel was not kept tight

As stated, the mag tube nut has to be tight.

My 870 does not have a cracked reciever...wonder if some problems were "overjuiced" reloads that the recoil reduction system tamed but cracked the reciever? Just a thought...a hot load in a standard 870 will kick like heck but the CT would handle it...

Just curious..If the crack appears on the right side at the rear of the ejection/ access port and the cause is a loose magazine nut/ loose barrel, why there? Does the loose barrel give the entire gun a shiver and that area is the weak spot? Seems as though the stress from a loose barrel on the inside/ top of the action would be down and away?

Notice the 1100 and 1187 have a very thin slot in the receiver side behind the ejection port. This is to prevent cracking the receiver at that point. I've always wondered why the 870 competition lacks it.

Remington states that receiver cracking on 870s (all) and older 1100s can be prevented by keeping the magazine tube nut tight and the barrel extension that slides into the receiver lubricated with grease. Avoiding loads over three-dram equivalent in target guns helps, too.

Worn springs can cause excessive bolt speed too.

FYI - I have an 1100 sporting clays gun and the barrel is marked "23/4 shells-target"
I asked Remington about a year ago, what does that mean. What was their definition of "target". They told me to shoot no stronger than 3 dram shells or the receiver could crack. Ted

Weren't some claiming in a recent thread that excessive bolt velocity does NOT cause receiver cracking? I think they're wrong.

I'm talking about an "870" Pump action gun...the bolt remains stationary until I slam it home at about.000025 MPH...shouldn't be an issue with mine...

Mine TB cracked and I never used loads heavier than 1oz 2 3/4 dr. To correct the problem I drilled a hole at the end of the crack but that did not stop it, then had it welded, it recracked. Why the stress concentrates there I dont know, but the metal is very thin in this area on mine. My fix was to get another receiver, and use another gun. Could it be a loose barrel i'm not sure as the bolt locks into the barrel and it should behave as one piece. Was one of my favorite guns for trap. mike

Why would milling a slot behind the inside of the ejection port, thus making that area thinner, and weaker, help to eliminate cracking?

It relieves the torsional stress in that area.

Very common problem Remington slotted the 1100/1181 and ended in a circle that fixed the problem most of the time. The receiver is thin period look at the thickness compared to a Model 12. I like 870's they are great guns just look a Rudy Etchens records but you can only build quality at a higher price point. They could make a thicker receiver for target guns but they sell mostly all 870 for hunting and they are outstanding guns for the money.

Has anyone had an 870 Comp. cracked receiver welded and, if so, by whom?

I have a lot of 1100's and I believe with Hap, worn, old and weak recoil springs are the most likely cause of the problem.
