It would appear that "Kentucky fishermen" have nothing on this indian tribe...

Calif. gray whale shot with machine gun

Sun Sep 9, 8:00 AM ET

NEAH BAY, Wash. - An injured California gray whale was swimming out to sea Saturday after being shot with a machine gun off the western tip of Washington state, officials said.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Kelly Parker said five people believed to be members of the Makah Tribe shot and harpooned the whale Saturday morning. The extent of the whale's injuries were not immediately known.

Tribe members were being held by the Coast Guard but had not been charged, said Mark Oswell, a spokesman for the law enforcement arm of the National Marine Fisheries Service.

A preliminary report said the whale was shot with a .50-caliber machine gun, Oswell said.

Coast Guard officials created a 1,000-yard safety zone around the injured whale, which was shot about a mile east of Neah Bay in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The whale had begun heading to sea Saturday afternoon, Oswell said.

Although the tribe has subsistence fishing rights to kill whales, Oswell said preliminary information indicates the whale may have been shot illegally.

"We allow native hunts for cultural purposes. However, this does not appear to be of that nature so far," he said.

The Makah Tribe has more than 1,000 members and is based in Neah Bay.

A call to tribal officials was not immediately returned on Saturday. Tribal Chairman Ben Johnson told The Seattle Times that the tribe has been seeking an exemption from the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act so that it could take up to five gray whales per year. However, Johnson said the tribe had not yet secured that exemption for a new hunt.

Well, at least the sharks and killer whales will eat good! It doesn't take them long to find a wounded whale.

Wild Indians with a .50 machine gun?..... or a 50BMG target rifle. Sensationalism at it's finest.

...or was it an SKS...or just a Marlin .22 for that matter?

Somehow, it was just the image of the Indians riding around in a punt-boat with a Browning M-2 mounted on it, that brought a media-induced smile to my face...

If you check the map, Neah Bay is at the end of the known earth. The Makah's don't even have a casino, which is unusual in these parts. Some time ago our family was 4-wheeling on the Olympic Peninsula and the kids wanted to see an authentic Indian village. After the tour which included dogs biting at our tires the kids decided the Indian life was not for them. Games with machine guns probably go unnoticed unless a stray bullet hits a passing ship or some tourist is aroused by the noise.

Does bagging a whale contribute to global warming or is it up there with Michael Vick's extracurricular sporting activities?

I am guessing here but the U.S.Govt. gave the Makah a .50 cal. rifle to humanely finish the whale off some years ago when they were given a permit to and did take a Gray whale. Local TV showed them "practicing" with it. Why do I get the feeling that it was never returned to the supplying agency.

Statement by the Makah Tribal Council

Hunter not ashamed of killing whale without a permit
The Makah Tribal Council denounces the actions of those who took it upon themselves to hunt a whale without the authority from the Makah Tribal Council or the Makah Whaling Commission. Their action was a blatant violation of our law and they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We are cooperating with the National Marine Fisheries Service in their investigation of this incident and will continue to do so.

The individuals who took part in this act were arrested by Makah enforcement officers and booked in our detention facility. They were released only after meeting the bail requirements set by the court. They will stand trial in our court at a future date.

We had a meeting of the general council of the Makah Tribe to discuss this incident and the membership of the tribe supports our action. The tribe has demonstrated extraordinary patience in waiting for the legal process to be completed in order to receive our permit to conduct a whale hunt. We are a law-abiding people and we will not tolerate lawless conduct by any of our members. We hope the public does not permit the actions of five irresponsible persons to be used to harm the image of the entire Makah tribe.

Am I the only one here who finds it ironic that if you go over to India, there are cows walking around and the people are starving because it is considered a "sacred" animal....but, they have no problem with shooting OUR whales with .50 caliber machine guns.

    Indians are hypocrites!
