I have a wood coat hanger from a dry cleaner in TULARE CA. with a 3 digit phone number. I am 78 yrs old and don't remember 3 digit numbers. Anybody have an idea as to how old this might be?

Until around the mid 1960s, My Aunt's phone number was two digits...52.

In the 50's, our number was 63M, grandma's was 44W.
In the early 60's, we finally got dial phones. I'm small town, cities probably had them sooner. HTH

I'm from a REAL small town. I remember when we didn't have numbers at all. You just picked up the ear piece and the operator comes on and says "Can I help you?" I'd say, "Sadie, I want to talk to Jim Bob down at Frankie's Pool Hall," and she'd hook me up.

A three digit number would limit you to 999 numbers, not very many. Tulare must have been a very small town at one time.
