    Wanted: young shooters for programs

    Leelanau News - MI

Youths with a desire to advance beyond video gaming may want to consider signing up for trap and skeet shooting programs starting this weekend at the Cedar Rod and Gun Club.

“All parents have to do is get the kids there, and sign a waiver,” said club president Tim Stein. “This is a push to get youths interested in the shooting sports.”

Young shooters must be 14-18 years old. The programs will run from 2-5 p.m.

The club is organizing a youth skeet league that will compete on Saturdays. Participants will join teams that keep track of the number of clay pigeons shot by gunners to determine winners.

On Sundays, youths are invited to shoot at trap targets that are released from a greater distance. No teams will be selected.

Both programs will begin this weekend, when participants will be taught the importance of safety and the proper form for shooting. Each will also shoot at 25 clay pigeons. In subsequent weeks, each participant will shoot at two rounds of pigeons.

Range master Wayne Speas of Cedar will oversee shooting activities. Scott Gemmer will head the skeet league. Helping teach proper technique will be top shooters Jim Balesh and Jess Reed.

There will be no charge, as many organizations and businesses have made donations toward the programs, Stein said. Included are Whitetails Unlimited and the Ruffed Grouse Society.

That's an awesome opportunity, too bad more clubs across the nation don't offer similar type of events.

Great program. Getting the youth interested in shotgun sports is a win for the future. John
