US aircraft were near Benghazi during Libya attack but unable to prevent deaths: report

US drones were in the skies over Benghazi during last month’s fatal attack on US ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, a new report claims.

Defense Department officials weighed sending troops to rescue Stevens and more than 30 other Americans whose compound was surrounded by an angry mob on Sept. 11, says the report by CBS News.

But no US counterattack or rescue effort was carried out.

The drone and other reconnaissance aircraft observed the final hours of the protracted, seven-hour battle at the US Consulate.

Add to the controversy the fact that the last two Americans didn't die until more than six hours into the attack, and the question of U.S. military help becomes very important.

really makes you wonder who ordered the attack. "We have to find out who killed these 4 Americans so we can get them." We knew where they were on 9-11-2012. they were running away with smoking guns and we could have got them then. why not? escape clause in their contract? what now? No ambassador to trade for the blind cleric. What to do? What a dilemma! Vote for Romney.

I keep wondering who the "protracted 7 hour battle" was fought by? Supposedly the two ex-Navy Seals and a couple of local security guards were all that were there to defend....All the Embassy people were rushed to the airport...And the mob had RPG's,mortars, and heavy machine guns...Something doesn't sound right....
