It has a narrower side-to-side throwing angle. In three-hole, the lefts and rights are much wider.

The old Winchester trap machines had holes on a plate which determined the maximum angles that it would throw the target. They were numbered 0 through 5 (if memory serves). 0 being a straight away target and 5 being very wide angles. The current standard ATA angles is what is referred to as a "2 hole" target, which is about 17.5 degrees either side of center. Bill Malcolm

When I was a kid, my Dad would shoot league on summer evenings, and I was banished down into one of the trap houses to set birds on those beasts. "We don't need no stinking automatic machines! Stumpy! Go set birds!"

It means you have to shoot 100 straight to be in a shoot off with a dozen other guys that shot 100 straight.

A three hole target would make the game more interesting.
