I hope this doesn't open a big can of worms, but I know there is a vast wealth of knowledge on this site. I am pondering a new TV purchase, something in the 50"-60" range. I see a number of differences such as LCD or plasma, and it appears that 1080i is common, whatever that is, but some are 720p. I need some advice on what to look for. What is the latest technology for TVs? etc.?

    Thanks in advance,

    Mark.

LCD is the way to go. The screen won't burn an image in. 1080p is not really necessary unless you go 52 inches or bigger(which it looks like you are). I don't know if you can find 50-60 inchers in 720p because the image is very pixely. Look around, there will be some great deals coming up for the holiday season.

I bought the Samsung 8000 series 46" LED. The DirestTV installer said "That's the best picture I've seen in 35 years" and it would be his next TV. I love it, you feel like your sitting in the crowd at nascar, golf , baseabll or football events. The price has come down since I got mine. Take a look at one b4 you buy!! Ron

I bought a 52" Vizio and like it a lot, had it about a year now. It is a Plasma and it is ok but does produce some heat, LCD is a better way to go but the Plasma is a lot cheaper

Bob's link was very helpful, but after reading it I am now interested in the new DLP rear projection TVs. I have read they are pretty amazing. Anybody have one?

I've got a DLP. 57" it works great, hi-def is clear as a bell. You can see the zits on the ladies faces in the close-ups.
