Why do all the heavier than lead loads have lighter payloads than regular lead loads?

Seems like they should be heavier across the board

I shoot 3 inch 1 5/8 oz of # 5 heavy shot. I do not think that is very light.
It is lighter than a 3 inch 2 oz load I also shoot but the heavy shot load also goes faster.

My shooting is not the question

Why aren't the heavier than lead loads loaded with the same pellet count their lead brothers?

    9point3,

Actually the pellet count is better if you are comparing to lead shot. You can drop one size pellet and still have the same energy because of the density factor.

Think of it like 1 oz of 8's vs 1 1/8oz's of 7 1/2's. The two sizes having the same energy because of the density difference.

    I hope I didn't confuse the matter.

I found out about 7 years ago that all those special shells were good for is emptying ones pocketbook. Those big ole 3" shells are not only painful on the wallet, but on the shoulder too!

I use 1 1/4 oz's of Kentucky 9's going 1350fps (give or take a little) and I've never not harvested a turkey because of the shell or the gun. I thump them flat dead at 45yrds with no problem.
