Tron, I thought you were talking about me for a minute, but I don't live in Michigan or have a trailer, so that leaves me out.

    85TTR,

My guess would be the Leatherstocking Gun Club of Oswego, NY. Orgazized about 1860. I'd be interested in learning if there are any clubs in continuous operation that organized earlier than 1860.

Who is credited with coming up with the first "Clay Target"?

He used a "tongue" on these targets to hold them on the trap he designed.

    Another would be:

Who is credited with the invention of the "Release" trigger ?

It is said he used a "shoe horn" on his original design...

My guess for the release trigger would be Herb Orre for the model 12, it was switchable from release to pull by sliding the safety.

There may have been someone else that developed a release but Herb is the one that comes to mind for me.

Edwardsville, IL claims to be the oldest continuely operating club in the US(Says so on there website so it must be true). I bet they are not the only ones claiming this though. I have shot there many times but i can't remember the dates they claim to have started. Very nice little club and know how to run a shoot.--Matt

I don't think that Kenny Ray should be allowed to play. He.s a professional.

    ANSWER

The trap club in Brookly, NY was the Bergen Beach Gun Club. It had its grounds at the eastern end of Avenue "U" where the Bergen Beach Yacht Club is now. It was founded in 1895. I have a patch given to me over 50 years ago by one of the members.

In 1960, long before I became interested in Trap, I moved 2 blocks away from its old location. It was long gone by then.

Who won the second "International Clay Pigeon (Ligowsky) Tournament" held in New Orleans in 1885? What gun maker did he represent for the next almost 35 years?

I think to be considered the oldest, it has to be still operating from the first birds thrown until present day. I'm not saying the ones listed do not fit this category just making a statement. Many clubs threw birds live/glass/clay many years ago but how many have survived the test of time?---Matt

It was 1892 when the Spokane Rod and Gun Club came into existence and the first charter was drawn up. That, however, was not when trapshooting began in Spokane. Among old records is an 1899 program advertising the “15th annual shooting tournament of the Northwest Sportsmen Association. This means that competitive shooting was going on in the area in 1885.

"Looks like this Question is going to be hard to prove!"

    I think your right....

Many claim to be the oldest but will hard to prove who was first.
