"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: "From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage." <br>

-- Alexander Fraser Tytler (later Lord Alexander Fraser Woodhouslee), in "The Decline and Fall of the Athenian Republic," published 1776.

minor edit for clarity at 2:29 pm cst

Well folks, several internet sources say the quote attributed to Alexander Tyler (or Alexander TYTLER, or Lord Woodhouselee, or any of several name variations) has been floating around the net since the election of George W. Bush in 2000. Since sources don't even agree on his correct name, I'll simply refer to him as "Alex".

Unfortunately, I have yet to find a credible source of information providing evidence that Alex is the author of the quote. More specifically, the quoted language apparently doesn't appear anywhere in Alex's writings.

It has been speculated that the quote might be "someone's" interpretation of Alex's writings. However, if that is true, the person doing the interpreting hasn't been identified either.

In my mind there are two bottom line points.

    1. The original author or source of many profound observations isn't clear or have been lost to history. That doesn't detract from the validity or importance of the observations.

    2. Unless or until someone can provide credible evidence to connect Alex with the quote, we should simply attribute the quote to an unidentified or anonymous author.

So... the origin of this particular quote may not be clear but the warning it provides is a good one and damned important. It should be heeded and shared.

Brian: You are correct. The message is a perfect fit for today's circumstances. Thanks for repeating it.

Bob Dodd: While you get credit for the earlier posting, the importance of the message is always tarnished when "we" misrepresent or misidentify the source. Nonetheless, thanks for sharing.

    Respectfully yours, sissy

Well... I think its a safe bet most of us prefer our constitutional republic with some meaningful limits on entitlements - that is unearned government giveaways - paid to layabouts, do-nothings, and other assorted slackers.

One alternative is the liberal utopia envisioned by Socialist Elect Obambi and the entire Democrat leadership group who want to redistribute the wealth of those pulling the wagon to the do-nothings loafing IN the wagon.

I offered to be "King" many months ago. Please remember there would be a flat tax to cover city, county, state, and federal tax that would fit on a small post it - like "income times X% and send in." This will apply to every single dollar earned without loopholes. Next all those IRS employees out of work due to the flat tax and simple form will be moved to welfare camps that will make a cubicle available to anyone that cares to check in and work in the yard to grow food and build furnituire for all camps and watch TV in a multi-purpose room or can check out and find a job. People that build homes on rivers and ocean surfs just may suffer catastrophic problems but will handle the repairs them selves. I needn't get into border security, including in the air, and sending money to tribes in Africa who refuse to move from areas that can't support them since I sense you'll know the details. This is just in the first few months - vice King positions are open.....breakemall....Bob Dodd
