    30th Annual Pocatello Gun Shoot

    Pocatello, Idaho

    .

End of third day (Saturday) report

    .

Three more guns were won by happy shooters today (Saturday).

Once again, the Utahans made out with two of them winning flats of shotgun shells -- Steve Petersen and Joe Sudbury. Joe says it is nicer shooting 100 Straights and winning trophies with free shells.

Mark Gunning of Idaho also won a flat of shells.

The big steak dinner hit the spot for everyone this evening. At least two ate for free. During dinner, several more flats of shells were given away.

    .

Seven more 100 Straights were shot in today's first event.

Four by Utahans, one by a Washingtonian, one by a Kansan, and one by an Idahoan.

    Travis Aiello (UT)

    John Berthelson (KS)

    Ron Cram (WA)

    Scott Ferro (ID)

    Ryan Hancock (UT)

    Joe Sudbury (UT)

    Gene Vigil (UT)

There were over twenty-five 99's shot in just today's first event.

Don't have the official results for this afternoon's Handicap events yet.

Congratulations to all the fine shooters here at the 30th Annual Pocatello Gun Shoot.

    .

Lots more guns and shotgun shells to be given away on Sunday.

    Two more Handicap events.

End of the second day (Friday) of the tournament report.

    .

The Utahans are really making their presence known.

Today, all three prize Weatherby rifles were won by Utahans -- two by men and one by a lady shooter.

Plus a Utahan -- Randy Love -- won one of the flats of shotguns shells given away.

Jeff Scott and Janet Merrill each won a flat of shotgun shells too.

Arriving late yesterday, Harley Lekvold of Mountain Home just keeps on winning. First, before he ever drove to Pocatello he got his ATA cross-registration paid for. He got his steak dinner paid for before he got here. And today, before he ever fired a shot, Harley won a flat of shotgun shells (Nitro 27s). Harley went straight to the tournament desk and told the young ladies to go ahead and engrave the Highest Overall and Highest All-Around trophies with his name. Harley is just so lucky with anything associated with Pocatello.

Eight flats of shotgun shells have been given away so far.

    And six rifles.

Lots more rifles and shotgun shells to be given away in the next two days !

    .

Joe Sudbury of Utah added to the 100 Straight he shot yesterday in Singles with another 100 Straight today in Singles making 200 Straight from the 16 yard line so far. Joe shot a 99 in Handicap.

Randy Love, also of Utah, shot a 100 Straight in Singles.

Do the Utahans shoot this well when they're at home ?

Just to show that an Idahoan can shoot... Willis Norton of Pocatello shot a 100 Straight. Willis credits all his fine shooting to the outstanding food being served here at the Pocatello Trap Club this week.

Scootermac50 shot a 100 Straight in Doubles on Friday using the shotgun shells he won on Thursday. The free practice tickets that he received upon registering were a big boost too.

    .

Our shooting continues at 8:30 AM on Saturday morning.

We are having a big steak dinner Saturday night.

Two more full days of shooting.

    Everyone is welcome !

    First day report

    .

Wednesday night we had a full house for our early registration and fun shooting. Everyone got a free practice ticket to get the ball rolling and most people shot 200 Singles, Doubles, and Handicap targets that evening.

Thursday we started the main events with 100 Singles, 100 Handicap, and 100 Doubles.

But before the first registered clay target flew in Singles on Thursday morning...

George Cook from Utah won a flat of shotgun shells of his choice.

Another Utahan -- Scootermac50 -- also won a flat of shotgun shells.

A shooter from Wyoming -- David Banks -- won a flat of shells.

And only one flat has been won by an Idahoan so far -- Greg Panther.

Rumor has it that they all chose Remington Nitro 27 shells with #7½ size shot, though they had their choice of any Federal, Remington, Rio, or Winchester shells.

    .

A shooter from Nevada won the first gun.

The Utahans are cleaning up pretty good as a third one won a prize -- this one won a gun.

The last gun given away Thursday went to a visiting Kansan -- John Berthelson. John was really worried about his Doubles shooting having only scored 87. Then, after sharing his worries, the 87 was the lucky number drawn for the Doubles gun prize. But four other shooters had also shot 87 in Doubles. The five of them had a shoot-off. Calling on all his will and stamina, Berthelson held on to win the Weatherby rifle. John got to choose the caliber of his choice. Noting that the deer are pretty big in Kansas, John wanted a 460 Weatherby.

Since his visit to Idaho began, Berthelson has also made a hole-in-one at one of the local golf clubs. He says he is just beginning to learn both games -- trap and golf. John says he would like to learn some other games and is looking for someone to teach him pool, darts, and cards.

    .

On the first full day, we have had six 100 Straights so far.

    Scott Ferro

    Joe Sudbury

    Gail Jones

    Brad Day

    Harvey Harpster

    Mike Leshko

    .

Harley Lekvold arrived late Thursday. But he got his steak dinner ticket immediately upon his registration. Says he wants his steak with brochette shrimp.

    .

Karl McKnight, the fine trap gun gunsmith, is here at the Pocatello shoot keeping everyone's gun working and keeping shooters on the line. Additionally, he is doing annuals on Krieghoffs, tuning Perazzis, and installing adjustable-combs and RAD-IIs on Brownings. Worked on a Beretta too.

    .

We will continue registration Friday morning and begin shooting registered targets at 9 AM.

For first time PITA shooters, membership is free for the first year. And everyone has had their targets cross-registered with ATA at no charge.

Three more days of fine shooting to come.

    Everyone is welcome !

    Remember...

After the shooting is done in the afternoon...

It is only an interstate exit away to restaurants, movies, shopping malls...

    Golf is nearby.

The world famous Snake River and the American Falls Reservoir are a stone's throw away for fishing and boating.

A casino is only a couple of exits away.

In his spare time, Randy Adams has offered to shuttle anyone wherever they would like to go.

Hammer1 made a couple of mistakes in this report. I won (By choice) Federal Gold Medals. I was in a miss and out shootoff with three short yardage shooters, beat two of them and lasted for 12 shots. The Wind, opps, I meant Randy Adams had fun adjusting the trap a couple of times while we did the shoot off. I guess I didn't need the rifle bad enough, as I lost the shoot off. The other error he made was that I asked For the Lowest Overall and Lowest all around trophies.
The real overall was that it was a great shoot, met many new freinds, saw some old ones, and had a good time. Thanks to Randy, Alan, Art and all the help.
    Harley Lekvold.

Eighteen guns and umpteen flats of shells were given away during our 30th Annual Pocatello Gun Shoot this past week.

Lots of 100 Straights and a whole bunch of 99's.

Mark the week before the Grand American in August on your 2014 calendar so you can join us for our 31st Annual Pocatello Gun Shoot.
