Over the last several days I have been receiving congratualtions and well wishes from all over the country. I have gotten in-person bear hugs, hand shakes, e-mails, text messages, phone calls, and so many of these shooters I don't even know! WOW! I can't begin to express my gratitude to those of you who cared enough to reach out to me.

I learned alot last week: Duct tape CAN stop the bleeding on your face, Windex will clean the dead skin off your stock, mole skin will sop up the blood just as well as a towel, the bruise on my lip has turned into scar tissue and will likely never bruise there again (I won't feel anything there again either), and I will have to work alot harder to scrape the skin off my face to warrant a skin graph. Thanks Doc.

So, thank you to you all for making my first "major" win a wonderful experience.

East Syracuse woman shines at state trap shooting championships at Bridgeport

    2009 Syracuse Online - by David Figura/The Post-Standard

Catherine Barney could justly lay claim to being the Annie Oakley of Central New York.

Barney, of East Syracuse, won the handicapped division championship this past Sunday at the at the 148th annual Empire State Amateur Trapshooting Championships held at the New York State Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) home grounds in Bridgeport.

She battled windy conditions and hit 95 out of 100 targets in the final round, becoming only the fourth woman to win the division since 1951.

Shooters in the handicapped division shoot from locations of anywhere from 18 to 27 yards away from the targets, depending on their ability. Barney shot from the 18½ yard line. The division featured 314 shooters, the majority of them men.¶

"She was shooting against all-Americans," said Doug Duncan, state American Trapshooting Association president. "That was a substantial title for anyone to win, never mind that she was a woman. That's an excellent score."¶

The six-day competition, held from July 7-12, featured more than 1,700 shooters from across the state, the eastern seaboard and Canada, shooting in a number of different divisions and events. For more results, check out the ATA website
