The newspaper predictions of low bird populations were correct. The mentioned number was an 84% drop from 2010. Our group of approximately 25 hunters stayed in Garden City and hunted North around the Finney and Scott County lines. Last year we got about 55 birds on opening day. This year we got 11. Sunday morning we found one rooster.

We were checked by two Kansas Wildlife and Parks officials as we finished up around noon Sunday. They were very polite and mentioned that we had done much better than others they had talked with.

The birds we did find were in or near cut Milo fields. We found few birds in the skimpy CRP fields and none in the Milo that didn't make any seed. More land seemed to be posted. Local folks were great as always. We had a good time and we will be back next year.

Side note: The guy who worked the hardest and shot his limit was using a Remington autoloader with Ken Rucker's Jack West synthetic stock and Auto-Buster recoil reducing device. Ron
