Surprise: PA College Slashes Instructors' Hours to Avoid Obamacare

Pennsylvania's Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is slashing the hours of 400 adjunct instructors, support staff, and part-time instructors to dodge paying for Obamacare.

"It's kind of a double whammy for us because we are facing a legal requirement [under the new law] to get health care and if the college is reducing our hours, we don't have the money to pay for it," said adjunct biology professor Adam Davis.

On Tuesday, CCAC employees were notified that Obamacare defines full-time employees as those working 30 hours or more per week and that on Dec. 31 temporary part-time employees will be cut back to 25 hours. The move will save an estimated $6 million.

"While it is of course the college’s preference to provide coverage to these positions, there simply are not funds available to do so," said CCAC spokesperson David Hoovler. "Several years of cuts or largely flat funding from our government supporters have led to significant cost reductions by CCAC, leaving little room to trim the college’s budget further."

The solution, says United Steelworkers representative Jeff Cech, is that adjunct professors should unionize in an attempt to thwart schools seeking similar cost-savings efforts from avoiding Obamacare.

"They may be complying with the letter of the law, but the letter of law and the spirit of the law are two different things," said Mr. Cech. "If they are doing it at CCAC, it can't be long before they do it other places."

Under the new CCAC policy, adjunct professors will only be allowed to teach 10 credit hours a semester. Adjuncts are paid $730 per credit hour.

"We all know we are expendable," said Mr. Davis, "and there are plenty of people out there in this economy who would be willing to have our jobs."

    AH Hahahahahahaahaha !!!!!!!!!

They thought that Obamacare wouldn't effect them?

Having retired in February of 2011, I work four days each week for Enterprise Car Sales driving vehicles all over the northeast and middle Atlantic regions. We used to only be asked not to exceed 40 hours per week but effective December 1st, we may not work over 25 hours per week. We have not been officially informed of that edict but our supervisor told us about it two weeks ago. When I asked the group sales manager, for whom we drivers ultimately work, what difference it makes if two drivers each work 30 hours in a week to get 60 hours of work done or three drivers work 20 hours each to get that same work done, she told me of this problem for employers.

Now, I know the Obama supporters will claim that "big business" is screwing the working man once again but do the rest of you working folks want to pay more for the next car or truck you buy or rent? Of course not, so all these governmental "better ideas" wind up hurting the working stiffs of the country while the Obama supporters on welfare and other govermental assistance programs have health care given to them. Our daughter works for Coventry Health Care in Harrisburg, PA which is going to be absorbed by Aetna in 2013. She tells us about all the "poor folks" who own luxury cars and wear nice clothing and lots of "bling" for whom she has to approve medical procedures even though they don't pay a dime in premiums.

My wife and I have good health and prescription insurance provided by our former employers in addition to Medicare, so I would not be a burden to Enterprise. But they cannot afford to take the chance that I might change my mind later on and be able to force them to insure me. Accordingly, my "extra income" is being reduced - thanks a lot, Hussein!

No doubt this is all Wal-Mart's fault, or is it Bush's, or is it Romney's? Maybe it's Grover Cleveland's fault. One never knows who liberal dullards will blame for their own stupidity.

    I love it.

I never thought of that, get your hours cut back, less pay, but you have to have insurance or pay the tax.

    Love it, love, love it!!!!!

About time big business colleges took a hit like all other businesses. They are too greedy.

You know how Rush got criticized for saying he hoped Obama would fail?

Well, I'm not saying I hope a lot of liberals lose their health insurance for at least a year...

But in all seriousness...Obama likely hopes that employers WILL screw their employees. The chant from Obama and the Elizabeth "Pocahontas" Warren types will be, "See, this is why we needed the PUBLIC OPTION..."
