I was told once that you go down 2 sizes from steel to lead, Such as #2 steel is the size of #4 lead and #6 steel is Like # 8 lead Is this true?

    targetmaster,

#2 steel is not the same size as #4 lead. The sizes are universal; #2 is #2 regardless of the metal.

Downrange energy is what you've heard about. Roughly, steel needs to be about 2 sizes larger to have the same downrange hitting power.

Well... I'll add that velocity adds to that equation. I suppose the discussion needs to be more focused on whether you're trying to compare hunting loads or target loads, known distance vs. unknown varying distances.

You can heat up (speed up) steel to a point to get a given shot size closer to a given lead shot size. For trap, #7 steel is more than adequate to break targets out to 27 yards with adequate velocity of 1300 fps +/-. For games we're using #7 well out to 65-70 yards, breaking birds.

Feel free to contact me off thread for more info,

According to Winchester, one oz of #7 steel has about the same amount of pellets as one oz of #8 lead.

Steel #7 comparable to lead #8
    Steel #6 comparable to lead #7 1/2 or #7
