A friend of mine are headed to Sparta this year from Alaska, and having planned a little late, aren't sure where the best place to stay near the shooting complex is. Any suggestions? I understand the very best are probably booked a year in advance...

Contact the Sparta Chamber of Commerce or the Tourism Bureau and they have info, at one time there was info on the shootata website.

Try O'Fallon, this will be my 3rd time at the same motel. Not a bad drive, mainly thru farmland..

The O Fallon area has the most for food and entertainment.
There is a motel in Okawville, IL. Do a search.

O'Fallon/Shiloh or Fairview Heights are the nearest "metropolitan" areas. They have quite a number of motels, restaurants, shopping malls, etc. Shouldn't be any problem finding a room in either area. These towns are about 45 miles north of Sparta. The drive is a pleasant one through, as SF SGM said, mostly farm land and small towns.
