If Obama can get the Olympic Games to Chicago, it might be fun to speculate if the shooting games would be at Sparta. It could result in further expansion of the Sparta facility. What month are the Summer Olympic games held-- Not August I hope.

According to some shooter's opinions, Sparta will be a distant memory by 2016 anyway.

The Aurora Gun Club was selected as the venue for the Olympic shooting events. Based on the history of the LA and Atlanta games this is no prize.

Sparta is too far from Chicago to be practable. The Aurora club has some of the facilities as well as space for all the shooting sports plus archery as well.

Chicago didn't get it. If they did, it was stipulated that ALL venues would have been within the city limits of Chicago.

Daley's cronies will get to build build the facilities, and probably with shooting fields, other cronies will get paid to tear them down, and other cronies will get the land.

Him and his cronies own the land the Olympic Village would have been built on. Their construction companies would build it and tear it down.

The tax payers would have foot the bill overuns.

Jim, it's not speculative at all. The land is the site of the now abandoned Michael Reese hospital, and it has already been purchased from Medline Industries for over $85 million.

From Wikipedia: "Under the new plan, the city of Chicago would borrow $85 million to buy the Michael Reese Hospital campus, near 31st and King Drive, from its current owner, Medline Industries. Medline will only get $65 million, because the company agreed to make a $20 million “charitable contribution” back to the city. The city will use that $20 million to pay up to five years of interest on its $85 million debt, demolish the hospital, and clean up the 37-acre (150,000 m2) site. Then sometime in the next couple years it will sell the site for at least $85 million to a developer or developers, who in turn will build a complex big enough to house about 15,000 Olympians. After the games the developer will sell or rent out the units.[7] Instead, demolition and cleanup costs were projected at $32 million and rising. Medline agreed to raise its "charitable contribution" to $32.5 million.[8] The site was purchased in early July 2009 for $86 million after Medline agreed to the changes in the contract."

Note how Chicago extracted $32 million in (political) contributions from Medline, and note that it was clearly purchased with the intent to use it for Olympic Village. So the city pays $86 million for the property, and gets back $32 million in "new" money from Medline, which barely covers demolition cost, already over budget. Interest on the debt will presumably come from general revenues, meaning taxpayers.

Two companies have already been selected (reported in the July 23 issue of the Trib) for another $11 million - on no-bid contracts, as usual. Both companies are campaign contributors. 45% of the many subcontractors needed for the demolition project are required to be minority owned businesses (and very likely campaign contributors as well).

These costs are not included in the reported cost of preparing the Nolympic bid you're hearing about on the news.

Lord only knows what other deals have been made off the Olympic bid, but in Chicago, that's the way things work.

    Vote early and vote often.

We should all band together and fire a salute over the Lincoln Park Traps during the opening ceremonies.
