The Heartland Grand, an annual Labor Day event at Stockdale Gun Club in Ackley, Iowa, posted increased attendance again this year, and, as you will see, it’s no wonder. Here’s a souvenir for those that were there and a promise of a nice shoot for those who have yet to come.

Early risers in rural Iowa get a sunrise painting and restful peace and quiet.

As trap-setting chair, Kyra gets her crew out just after dawn and closely monitors them as they go about their work.

The gun club’s layout is particularly attractive and Dale draws a good crowd. It is a beautiful place to shoot.

Friday night means “Wobble Trap” which produces not only a lot of fun, but some good scores as well.

Central Zone Handicap Committeeman Bob Felber, who contributed some of these photos, begins his pre-shot routine, masking his nervousness.

Jacque and George Schnellenberger attended as usual:

and Kenny Hausman broke his first 25!

Tony Fortino (right) and Drew Strohecker shot off for Junior.

Newly-inducted Trapshooting Hall of Fame member Dean Bright shot off for a place trophy in singles and while the spectators gave it to Dean on the quality of his breaks,

A typical shoot-off with Minnesotans out-numbering all other states by four-to-one. Here are, from the left, Nick Fetzik, Kenny Brandt, Dean Neumann, Roman Pompe, and Eric Munson.

Mornings are the prettiest part of the day in rural Iowa:

In a breathtaking display of political sleight-of-hand, the Iowa Pork Producers Council somehow persuaded the government to build countless so-called “Wind Farms” consisting of enormous fans spread out across the countryside all over Iowa.

    Enormous-fans-web_zps2d54d810.jpg

Their purpose is to provide cooling breezes to hogs who might otherwise be uncomfortable in their yards in the summer heat. There must have been an over-warm barrow or gilt somewhere in Hardin County on Saturday because they turned them all on and the singles were sportified with 20+ MPH wind from the west actually keeping several shooters from complaining that singles are too easy these days. Of course, the kids just shot and had fun.

Tom Larkin was one of the vendors on hand and kept shooters’ guns in top form by working, it seemed, all the time.

The steak cookout on Sunday was as good – and popular as always:

Kyra took advantage of the club’s hospitality to get new data for her widely-read “On the Road” column in Canine Epicure magazine. Here she is waiting for the host, Dale, to start before taking her first bite.

    Kyra-waits-for-hostess_zps99aaf01f.jpg

    The winners:

Singles: Roman Pompe, Havlickuv Brod, Czech Republic. With a lone tally of 199, Roman duplicated his 199-all-alone the last time he was here, 2011.

    Roman-Pompe-singles-champion-web_zps429abf6a.jpg

Doubles: Scott Messenger, Winona, Minnesota, 100 straight, again the only one on the grounds.

    Handicap: Luke Kalina with a 98 and shoot-off scores of 24, 25.

High Over All & High All-Around: Dean Neumann, Dakota, Minnesota.

If you attended the shoot we hope these photos remind you of good times; if you didn’t we hope they convince you that you missed something special.

    Yours in Sport,

Neil Winston, Bob Felber, and Kyra

Great photos Neil-thanks. Are you telling us that shoot attendance was up again? How could that be? I suppose the economy must be pretty good out in Iowa!!

I made it for the first time. Shot all 300 on Friday. Will be back next year hopefully for more days and with less empty seats in my car. Thanks for the nice pictures and commentary.

Outstanding photos and cut lines! Really made me wish I'd been there :(

A little different place than when Merle and I shot there in the 1960s. The trap house was a wooden door or gate, if I recall. Little Dale set the targets and Merle would sometimes let him shoot. When Dale missed, back to setting targets he went. Merle and I had all kinds of competitions: Most obnoxious call for the targets (mimicking some shooters we knew...pre Zauhar). Left handed, trade guns, shoot an old hammer gun Merle carried on his tractor...and on and on.

Really fun times. Very proud of Dale's work.

Well done Neil. You really know how to frame a shot.

Hey I guess that applies to trapshooting too.

First time there...outstanding targets, very impressed. I'm surprised the shoot isn't bigger considering the quality of the venue.

We thank everyone for their favorable comments. And yes, Ollie, while the early days were a bit down because the heat index was high, the HAA days bounced back and the shoot ended up 10% with the Championship days up a solid 20%.

If everyone who reads this thread likes what he or she sees, it will be even better next year!

    Hi Niel,

Great pictures and promo for this Club..

Excuse my ignorance , but would you please add a web link with contact information and location of this fine shooting range..

Being in Newfoundland/Labrador, Canada we are not too familuar with the location of these clubs, but would definately make an effort to attend some of those shoots if we had the information..

My wife Goldie and I travel the 4200 mile round trip twice a year to Pennsylvaina to take in competitions , so what is an extra few miles to do what we love so much..

    Many thanks in advance,

    Robert Appleby

Heck Bob, stop in and see us on your way through. We're right on your way, 8 hours short of Shamokin. I'm hoping on getting out to see Dale myself. Great looking facility he's built there. He can also provide a real 2 or 3 hole target with the switch of a pin. These fields are centered each day Neil, I'd bet on that one;) Robert, 8:08 when you posted, or 1/2 hour late? Pretty country you have there on the rock, hope to get back there someday also. Great people and an even better sense of humour. Shoot well and enjoy, Bob

It's at the orange pin, Robert.

. . . and when you see this, you are there!

We hope you can make the trip!
