What is considered the standard caliber for modern day military and swat sniper rifles? I believe it use to be .308 caliber and a Remington 700 action, is this still the case?

Yes, the .308 is still king of sniper rounds, although some police units have gone to the .223.

The modern sniper rifle lives on as the M40A2. However, it is now being replaced by the M110 SASS (Semi Automatic Sniper System). This weapons system is based on the AR10 rifle. It still chambers the 7.62mm NATO round. This changeover started in April of this year, although there are a lot of issue M40A2's, M21's (Navy SEAL version of M14), and even scoped M14's still being used.

    Best,
    Dennis
