How does one remove sidelocks from a double?

Yes, the screw through both locks comes out.

What next? The locks are in tight and have never been removed in 50 years.

The gun is new and unfired.

I know on S&W revolvers, the sideplate comes off with a soft mallet rap on the frame.

    thanks !

Back off on the one screw that is holding the side plates on until you have at least 1 thread still engaged. Tap on the screw head lightly with a plastic mallet and that will loosen the opposite plate. Once that plate is removed you can tap the other plate off through the receiver with the plate off, use a wooden dowel. Before the removal procedure make sure the locks are cocked. About a 30 second procedure to remove both locks, when reinstalling make sure you don't over tighten the screw or you will put a bind on the side locks.
