When shooting a side by side shotgun, do you have to compensate for the barrels being offset from the rib? Does the left side barrel shoot slightly left of target and the right side barrel shoot slightly right of target?
I just shoot it. I do not compensate at all as the barrels are usually designed to cross their patterns at I think 30yds. Anyhow it has never, ever been a concern for me. Kind of like an O/U that one barrel shoots low the other shoots high.
Yeah, just shoot it. Some people wring their hands over this, have all sorts of theories (lots of theories), and no tangible proof that it makes any difference. What do the manufacturers say?
Eighty to a hundred years ago when the good shooters were using doubles to post scores most of us would die for, you can be assured they were not thinking, "Okay, I got a hard left bird here, I loaded the right barrel, and that means I have to add/subtract X inches from what I think would be a proper lead."
I own 2 SxS's ~ I shoot them the same as I shoot my O/U guns. I never give it a thought! Get most of my birds on the first shot and never think of the second shot.
Almost all are regulated to shoot the same point of impact @ 40 yards. Just shoot it like everything else and it will break targets or kill birds like any other shotgun.
POI seems to be the same at trap distances. What I found with my older SXSs was that I had to alternate between barrels. If I didn't the shooting barrel would get hotter and slightly distort at the breech causing a stiffer than normal lock up. Alternating barrels stopped this. Mind you my SXSs were/are all older field models and are quite light weight.
