NICS Examiners, that perform firearm transaction background checks, and their associated management team are classified as “essential personnel” and are not subject to the federal government shutdown and furloughs. Therefore, there should be no impact on the FFLs concerning firearm transaction background checks. However, most of the NICS support personnel are subject to the furloughs. These furloughs will impact appeals, support and liaison activities. Therefore, those individuals who have requested an “appeal of a denial” will be subject to a delay in response to their request.
