What are the shells that the shooters use at the Olympics? Velocity, weight, brand? I have heard various answers. Not sure if any of them are correct. Your answers are most appreciated.

Winchester makes an international load. Its on their website.

12 gauge, 24 grams of shot (a hair less than 7/8 ounces) and 1350 fps muzzle velocity.

I think that's pretty typical for both international trap and skeet.

The trap loads would be 7-1/2 shot and the skeet loads 9 shot.

There are a number of other brands that make international loads, Kemen being one I know of.

I'd guess B&P, Rio, and Fiocchi make international loads too.

Kemen makes a great Bunker load. I saw them used at the Olympics.

Kemen makes a great cheap shell bunker load or not! I'm shooting the 8's, I think they are around 1160fps, and am paying $51 a case.

Trappy, you're shortchanging yourself by shooting 1160 fps. I thought my 1210 fps were fast enough for bunker shooting. I was told they weren't. Int'l loads typically are 7/8 oz @ over 1300 fps (can't remember exactly how fast). The last time I shot bunker (a couple of weeks ago), I used Fiocchi International Loads and what a difference they made. Expensive, yes. Worth it, definitely -- I hit way more targets than I had using the 1 oz, 1210 fps. YMMV.

Oh sorry, I meant to say for regular trap, not bunker.

According to the winchester web site. They are the offical sponsors of the olympic shooting teams. They even have a little bio of the shooters types of guns and ammo.

    Guys...

The Olympic Videos have some great shots of targets breaking. Granted they are puff targets but look at how these 7/8 Oz loads are breaking them. Yes... these are the best trap shooters in the world and you see how great the breaks are so why are we still using 1-1/8 oz loads at ATA?

Tom, You are right they are "puff targets". If you watch the slow motion close ups you will see that the targrt is only breaking into about 5 or 6 pieces.

From doing a bit of reading...

Targets supplied by China. Suppose to be hard even by European standards.

They were suppose to soften them a bit for the games but looks like it never happened.

According to the website they are shooting 24.5 gram loads and they tape a powder bag under each target - the targets themselves are unchanged for the Olympics...
