For some reason, people think giving out the serial number is opening up risk of a scam artist filing a false police report and reporting the gun in question, as stolen. This was the reasoning I have seen, given by the sellers who hide the serial numbers. I do not see how this scam would ever work.

Then there is the small minority of gun owners who think "Big Brother" scans all gun internet sites, collecting serial numbers of all firearms displayed and will use it for their own evil purposes. They will reference the Nazis and Stalin and make wacky conclusions. Little do they know that a FFL dealer's bound books contain all the information that "Big Brother" needs.

If you go to Paxton Arms, you can see the serial numbers listed in the ads, out in public view. Obviously some gun owners/dealers do not see anything wrong with giving out the serial numbers and are not worried about being scammed or having LE knock down the door to confiscate their inventory.
