In a discussion today a friend recommended that the old style Winchester wads (those made for the compression formed hulls) should be used in reloading the European straight wall 28 ga hulls (Fiocchi, Rio, Armusa, etc.). I disagreed and said that if one were to use Winchester wads in those hulls one should use the 28 HS wads. Am I right?

Yes, you are correct--HS wads have a larger dia. than the std wad--(suggest you have him mic. both and he will see the diferrence). This "larger wad will decrease/eliminate powder migration in a straight wall hull--however it's always best to work with a powder manf. published reloader guide/ or call the powder manuf. directly.

You are more correct then he is, but even the AAHS wad might not be big enough to seal correctly.

Here you can see the diffrence between the HS and the federal wad which is used in the straight wall hulls. If anything the HS wad is a better choice then the federal wad which is designed for straight wall cases. The old style AA would be a very poor choice in a straight wall case.
