Anyone have a chance to hunt in South Dakota on opening day? Where did you hunt and how did the bird populations look? From what I have read they should still be good!

I did not make it to SD this year. Those who have returned from the Mitchell area said it was the best year ever. DNR said best hatch since 63'.

It was easier the second weekend versus the first. Too muddy fields kept the combines out, so almost 100% of the corn and milo were still in. Beans were out. Birds didn't have to move much to stay safe.

This is west of Mitchell, SD.

Hard to hunt a square mile of muddy 20" row corn.

Here's a pic at the end of the day at the farm. Sorry for the poor quality of the photo.

I would still like to go sometime in the next 3 weeks. Is there a good site to find public hunting ground maps?

    **Click the link.**

Then click on plate 38, which is mostly Day county. You'll find almost 200 Public Land and WIA areas there, and on the ground you'll rarely see another hunter. Lots of birds. Paradise. Ldging and food in Webster.

It's better than good. Accordning to the SDG&FD count this is the greatest number of birds since 1963, the last year of the Soil Bank program. It's due to the huge acreage which has been put into the Conservation Resrve Program, 1,300,000 acres in SD alone. The CRP program starts winding down next year...[sniff]. Budget problems, you know, and not many voters in the CRP states.

I've never hunted that area, but reports from there have been good. Try south from Dickinson to the SD border.

NoDAK is also loaded with birds, from Bismarck west to the river and everywhere inbetween.

In SoDak,Day cty has a lower bird count due to 10"plus of rain in June, drowned out alot of nests, everywhere else the #'s are high,Voight,Kimball,Ipswitch to name a few.
